By JOHN J. FLATHER, Ph. B., M. M. E. In this age of innumerable applications of power a work treating of the methods of measuring it, must be of value to all engineers. The electrical engineer especially, is frequently called upon to estimate the quantity of power required in the operation of the endless variety of machinery which the electric motor is now called upon to drive, and he will find in the work before us a most concise and accurate guide. The author discribes all the more general forms of dynamometers including friction brakes, absorption and transmission dynamometers, and devotes attention to the power required to drive lathes and other machinery. The chapter on the measurement of water power will also prove useful to many. The book is well illustrated throughout, and the subject treated from a thoroughly practical stand point. The D'Unger Long Distance Telephone (the "Far Away Talker") can now be had for use in Telephone Exchanges on a small annual royalty, and on no other terms. It is constructed under numerous patents, especially Patent No. 390,575, granted Oct. 2, 1888, which is not only the first, but the only undisputed and indisputable valid patent granted for an All-Carbon Multiple-Contact Microphonic Telephone Transmitter. All allcarbon multiple-contact telephone transmitters built without or under patents granted since Oct. 2, 1888, are infringements upon Patent No. 390,575a fact to be borne in mind by persons contemplating the use of Telephones. The "D'Unger" is the only self-cleaning telephone in the world. It sends speech one (1) mile or five thousand (5,000) miles in a perfectly clear manner; can be operated at half the ordinary expense; is always in order, and has for its Receiver a Patent Compound Magneto, making but one magnetic field. It has likewise Paul D'Unger's Patent Diaphragm Regulator, which prevents the words from running together. As a whole it is complete, cannot be surpassed, and has no equal. Pronounced by all unprejudiced electricians to be the Peer of Telephones. Address D'Unger Long-Distance Telephone Co., Palmer House. No D'Unger Telephones can be had for exchanges except through me. Perfect control of combustion regardless of fuel or barometer. Perfect smokelessness when combined with mechanical stoking. Temperature of feed water up to 300°. From which results the large net economy of fuel due to this system.
