Lorsque les peintres modernes ont eu à traiter le même sujet, ils ont également imité le type donné par les anciens. Canova, dont tous les travaux semblaient inspirés par les graces, en donnant le groupe de ces déesses, les plaça autrement qu'on ne l'avait fait jusqu'alors; en leur conservant un caractère identique, il varia cependant leur expression d'une manière assez distincte. Le sculpteur moderne a reproduit avec une extrême sagacité les finesses de son sujet, et tous les attributs de cette charmante allégorie. Les Graces devaient être nues pour qu'on pût admirer leurs charmes; elles devaient pourtant être voilées, car la modestie est aussi une grace, et le tissu léger qu'il a fait flotter autour d'elles les pare sans les couvrir. Quel abandon dans les bras! quelle délicatesse dans les mains! que d'affection dans la manière dont ces trois sœurs s'embrassent! que d'élégance dans la disposition des cheveux!
