thor of the following Treatife. O awayTM } UR Youth Arithmetick like Tricks are taught, C. J. S Ince every one is not a competent Judge of the Intrinfick Worth of Books, fo as to diftinguish between thofe of the fame Subject whether well or ill done, and fince all those that apply themselves to the Study of Arithmetick, or any other Art or Mystery, would certainly make choice of fuch Tracts for their Inftruction as are moft likely to accomplish them in a fhort time: But moft being not capable of chufing for themfelves, as unacquainted with the true Character of Books on that Subject, we thought it might not be improper to let 'em know the Excellency of the following Treatife, not only from the Acceptation it hath found in the World (about 8000 having been printed in fix förmer Editions) but alfo from the following Account given of it by the Authors of the Works of the LEARNED for the Month of February, 1695. It's needlefs for us to infift on the Usefulness of the Work, or Spend many Words to give you an Idea of it, the Ingenious Author having already performed that in his Title Page: Only this we shall venture to fay, that though it be with many Books, as it is with Perfons who have a plump Countenance and a confumptive Body, the diligent. Perufer will not find this Book to be fuch; but on the contrary, that the Author doth faithfully perform what bis Title promifes, and that in the most rational, plain, and compendious Manner, of any that we bave hitherto feen upon the Subject: Nor can we forbear giving this Judgment of the Work, That it deferves Encouragement from the Publick, as being calculated for the Improvement of Trade and Commerce, to which our English Nation is fo much indebted for their Fame and Grandour, and that great Figure which they make in the World. And feeing the general Current of Education amongst the middling Sort of People, and not a few of the Gentry does in our Days run towards. Trade and Merchandize; we cannot but conceive that this Book, if once known, will meet with a general Acceptation by all Men of Bufi nefs, who tho' they may, perhaps, think they don't fand much in need. of it themselves, yet muft certainly be convinced of its Usefulness, on many Occafions, to Men of the greatest Experience; and that it is ab.. folutely needful for their Children and Servants, if they defign to employ them in Trada or Commerce, or have occafion to Travel. And bow much much Labour it may fave to School-mafters, and Toil and Vexation to Scholars, thofe who are converfant in fuch Affairs, will be better able to judge than we are to exprefs. Since which firft Impreffion, 14 or 15 Sheets having been added in the Second, befides fome meterial Additions and Alterations in the Third, and Improvements in these others, we doubt not but upon perufal every unbyaffed Reader will find the Character to be no more than the genuine Merits of this Book.
