Quoiqu'il soit d'usage de représenter Diane avec un arc, des flèches, un carquois, un cerf ou des chiens, l'absence de tous ces attributs ne doit pas empêcher de reconnaître ici la déesse de la chasse, par la manière dont sa tunique est relevée au dessus du genou. Le statuaire a choisi le moment où la déesse, achevant sa toilette, après avoir ajusté sa tunique avec deux ceintures, l'une au dessous du sein, l'autre sur les hanches, cherche à agrafer sur l'épaule droite son manteau, dont elle tient un des bouts de chaque main. Ce mouvement donne à la figure une attitude charmante et aux draperies un agencement des plus gracieux. La tête, également remarquable, est d'un caractère vraiment enchanteur, et coiffée avec le goût le plus exquis. La beauté et la délicatesse de l'exécution doivent faire penser que cette statue a joui de quelque célébrité parmi les anciens; cependant elle n'a aucun rapport avec un petit bronze publié par Montfaucon, quoiqu'on l'ait regardée comme une copie faite d'après cette statue qui est en marbre grec. Trouvée dans les ruines de Gabies, puis placée à la villa Borghèse, elle est maintenant au Musée du Louvre; elle a été gravée par M. Bouillon. Haut., 5 pieds. Although it is customary to represent Diana either with a bow, arrows, a quiver, a stag, or some dogs, yet the absence of all these attributes does not prevent the goddess of the chase being here recognised, by the manner with which her tunic is tucked above her knee. The statuary has chosen the moment when the goddess, finishing to deck herself, and having ajusted her tunic with two girdles, the one above her bosom, and the other over her hips, is fastening over her right shoulder, a mantle which she holds with both her hands. This action gives a charming attitude to the figure, and a most graceful arrangement to the draperies. The head, equally remarkable, has a truly enchanting character, and is attired in the most exquisite taste. The beauty and delicacy in the execution must make it be believed that this statue enjoyed some celebrity amongst the ancients yet it has no connexion with a small bronze published by Montfaucon, although it has been looked upon as a copy taken from this statue which is in greek marble. It was found in the ruins of Gabii, and placed in the villa Borghese: it is now in the Museum of the Louvre, and has been engraved by M. Bouillon. Height, 5 feet 3 inches. |
