CHAPTER I.

A SKETCH OF THE HISTORY OF LEGISLATIVE MINE INSPECTION.

IN consequence of the Reports of the Commissioners on the Employment of Children and Young Persons in Mines and Collieries, which were published during the year 1841, the Legislature, in the following session of Parliament (10th August, 1842), passed the statute 5 & 6 Vict. c. 99 (a), whereby the employment of women in mines and collieries was prohibited. The same Act also contained provisions regulating the employment of boys and apprentices therein; and also authorised and empowered any one of Her Majesty's principal secretaries of state to appoint, whenever he should think fit, a proper person to visit and inspect any mine or colliery of what nature or kind soever.
