Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of the Interior be, and he is hereby, authorized and directed to place upon the pension-roll, subject to the provisions and limitations of the pension laws, the name of Eli Persons, late a private in company K, seventythird regiment Ohio volunteer infantry, and pay him a pension from and after the passage of this act.

CHAP. 72.—An act to remove the political disabilities of Henry Heth, of Virginia Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, (two-thirds of each House concurring therein, That all political disabilities imposed upon Henry Heth, Henry Heth of Virginia, by the fourteenth amendment to the Constitution of the moved. United States, by reason of his participation in the rebellion, are hereby removed.

CHAP. 73.—An act for the relief of Joseph J. Petri

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That there is hereby appropriated, out of any money in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated, the seph J. Petri. sum of five thousand dollars, to be paid to Joseph J. Petri, of the State of Illinois, in recognition of his heroic and successful efforts in rescuing from starvation and impending death a train of emigrants snowed in between the Sierra Nevada and Trinity Mountains in the months of November and December, eighteen hundred and forty-nine, and in payment of the expenses and losses incurred by him in the same. Approved, February 12, 1875.

CHAP. 74.—An act for the relief of De Witt C. Chipman.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of the Treas ury be, and he is hereby, authorized and directed to pay to De Witt C. Chipman, out of any money in the treasury not otherwise appropriated, the sum of five thousand five hundred and thirty-five dollars and twentythree cents, in full satisfaction and payment of all demands whatever of the said Chipman as late collector of internal revenue for the eleventh district of Indiana.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the sum of six thousand dollars be, and the same is hereby, appropriated, out of any money in the Treasury of the United States not otherwise appropriated, to Francis Dodge, trustee for the owners of the schooner Fairfax, as compensation for the loss and destruction of said schooner, in October, eighteen hundred and sixty-one, by reason of the seizure and appropriation of the same by the naval authorities of the Government. Approved, February 13, 1875.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United Payment to Wil- States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of the Treasury is hereby authorized and directed to pay to William J. Coite, late acting assistant paymaster, United States Navy, out of any money in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated, the sum of nine hundred and fifty-three dollars and thirty-three cents; the same being the amount falsely returned by the clerk of said Coite, when the same was unable, through sickness, to supervise his final accounts. CHAP. 85.-An act to enable Ann Jennette Hathaway, executrix of the last will and testament of Joshua Hathaway, deceased, to make application to the Commissioner of Patents for the extension of letters patent for improved device for converting reciprocating into rotary motion.

And upon such application so filed the Commissioner of Patents shall be authorized to consider and determine the same in the same manner, upon giving the same notice, and with the same effect as if the application had been duly filed within the time prescribed by law, and as if the original term of said patent had not expired, should the same expire before he has reasonable time to inquire into the facts and make his decision: Provided, That no person shall be held liable for the infringement of said patent, if extended, for making use of said invention since the expiration of the original term of said patent, and prior to the date of its extension.

B. Tyler. Tyler, of Princeton Caldwell county, Kentucky, out of any money in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated, the sum of one hundred and twenty dollars, in full for the loss of a horse, his private property, which was killed on the battle-field of Stone River, on the thirty first day of December, eighteen hundred and sixty-two; said John B. Tyler at the time being in the service of the United States Army.
