A HANDY BOOK ON THE LAW OF MERCHANT SHIPPING. ABRIDGED FROM THE LARGE TREATISE BY MAUDE AND POLLOCK. BY THOMAS HENRY JAMES, Esq., M.A., OF LINCOLN'S INN, BARRISTER-AT-LAW. •BODI LONDON: HENRY SWEET, 3, CHANCERY LANK LIVERPOOL: WEBB & HUNT, 9, CASTLE STREET. 1866. PREFACE. THE object of this treatise is to supply a cheap and compendious code of the Law relating to Merchant Shipping. To effect this, the Author has (with permission) gone carefully through the large and valuable work by Maude and Pollock, which has the double advantage of being the most clearly arranged and the latest of the text books; and of which the present volume does not pretend to be more than an abridgment. The details of decided cases and the large appendix of statutes and forms have been omitted, and the broad Principles which the decisions establish, alone retained. It is hoped that this "Handy-book" will be of service, both as an introductory treatise to those who are commencing the study of this branch of the law, and as a book of reference to the general body of the mercantile community.
