"Of the Alankar class there were eleven candidates who underwent a written examination in poetry, rhetoric, and grammar. Three students deserve prizes. I recommend that out of the 4 goldmohurs for this class, 2 goldmohurs be given to Haranand Surma 1st, and one of each to Chandramohana Surma and Greeshchander Surma.

"In the Sahitya class there were eight candidates, who underwent a written examination in poetry, grammar, and translation from Vernacular into Sanscrit. Two are deserving of prizes. Out of the fixed sum of 3 goldmohurs, I recommend that 2 goldmohurs be given to Ramcomul Surma, and one to Oomeshchunder Surma.

"In the Jyotish class there were seven candidates. Only one, Oomeshchunder Surma, appears deserving of the reward, and to him I would award the whole of the amount set aside for this class, namely, 3 goldmohurs.

"The grammar class underwent an oral examination in grammar.

"Of the 1st class there were nine candidates. Two appear deserving of prizes. I beg to award, out of the fixed sum of 3 goldmohurs, 2 goldmohurs to Nillolohit Surma, and one to Oomakanta Surma.

"Of the 2d class there were ten candidates, two are worthy to receive prizes. I recommend that, out of the 3 goldmohurs apportioned to this class, two be awarded to Brajanath Gupta. and one to Kedarnath Surma.

"From the 3d class there were seven candidates, of whom two are deserving of rewards, namely, Manohur Gupta and Syamacharn Surma, between whom I would equally divide the sum of 2 goldmohurs fixed for this class.

"From the 4th class there were twelve candidates. these, four are deserving; but as only 2 goldmohurs are fixed for the class, I recommend they should be equally divided between the two best, namely, Ramkoomar Surma and Nilmoni Surma."

15. On the 31st May 1847, four students of the Smriti class, viz. Chandramohana, Khettermohana, Sreeshchandra, and Brajamohana, were examined by Colonel Riley, examiner of candidates for the situation of Law Officers according to the provisions of Regulation XI. of 1826, and Act V. of 1845, and two of them, viz. Chandramohana and Sreeshchandra have

obtained certificates of qualification by eminent knowledge of the Hindu Law, to hold the office of Hindu Law Officer in any of the established Courts of Judicature.

16. Mr. Kerr, the Principal of the Hindu College, examined the English class, on the 21st, 22d, and 23d Sept. 1847, and considering the limited time allowed for English studies, viz. two hours daily, the result is as satisfactory as could be expected.

17. Only one student (Doorgachurn) competed for the junior scholarship allotted to this Institution with the Hindu College competitors, and the following is the result of his examination: viz. he obtained an aggregate of 92-3 marks, which does not entitle to a scholarship.

18. Certificates of proficiency according to rules are to be given to the undermentioned students who have left the College during the year:

1 Sreeshchandra Sarma.

2 Ramkrishna Sarma.

19. The Library is in good condition, and much frequented by the students.

20. Under the sanction of the Hon'ble President, statements were furnished to the Revd. Mr. Long, copies of which are annexed in the Appendix, with the addition of the names of the gentlemen who held the office of Secretary to this Institution during the period mentioned opposite their respective names.

Statements of the number of pupils (stipendiary and nonstipendiary) each year from the establishment of the College in 1824 to the end of the year 1846.

22. The general conduct of the Professors and English Masters has been perfectly satisfactory.
