Chapter 1.

An Act to Amend Section Sixty-nine of Chapter Eight of the Revised Statutes as Amended by Chapter Fifty-eight of the Public Laws of Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-one, Relating to the Compensation of Chief Forest Fire Wardens and Their Deputies.

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine, as follows:

R. S., c. 8, sec. 69; 1921, c. 58; relating to duties of fire wardens and deputy wardens and employment of assistants, amended. Section sixty-nine of chapter eight of the revised statutes as amended by chapter fifty-eight of the public laws of nineteen hundred and twenty-one is hereby amended by striking out all of said section beginning with the words "The commissioner may" in line eighteen of said section and substituting in place thereof the following: 'Deputy forest fire wardens shall perform such duties, at such times and under such rules and regulations, as the commissioner, or the chief fire warden of the district, with the approval of the commissioner, may prescribe. They shall receive as compensation three dollars for each and every day of actual service, with an allowance for actual necessary expenses of travel and subsistence, except that when in charge of fire fighting operations they shall be paid at the rate of thirty

five cents for each hour of actual service and be provided with subsistence during such service', so that said section, as amended, shall read as follows:

'Sec. 69. Employment of assistants eliminated; deputy wardens to be allowed expenses of travel and subsistence, except when in charge, then to be paid 35 cts. per hour. The chief forest fire wardens, under the direction of the commissioner, shall have general supervision of their respective districts and of the deputy forest fire wardens therein. Each chief forest fire warden;. when directed by the commissioner, shall patrol the forests of his district for the purpose of searching out, extinguishing and guarding against forest fires. He shall investigate and gather evidence regarding the causes of forest fires, enforce all laws relating to forests and forest preservation, arrest all violators thereof, prosecute all offenses against the same, and in this connection shall have the same power to serve criminal processes against such offenders and shall be allowed the same fee as a sheriff, or his deputy, for like services, and shall have and enjoy the same right as a sheriff to require aid in executing the duties of his office. The chief forest fire wardens shall perform such other duties, at such times, and under such rules and regulations as the said commissioner may prescribe, and each shall receive as compensation four dollars for each and every day of actual service, with an allowance for actual necessary expenses of travel and subsistence. Deputy forest fire wardens shall perform such duties, at such times and under such rules and regulations, as the commissioner, or the chief fire warden of the district, with the approval of the commissioner, may prescribe. They shall receive as compensation three dollars for each and every day of actual service, with an allowance for actual necessary expenses of travel and subsistence, except that when in charge of fire fighting operations they shall be paid at the rate of thirtyfive cents for each hour of actual service and be provided with subsistence during such service.'

Chapter 2.

An Act to Increase the Amount Allowed for Clerk Hire in the Office of Clerk of
Courts in Franklin County.

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine, as follows:

R. S., c. 117, sec. 45; 1921, c. 219; relating to clerk hire in county offices, amended. Section forty-five of chapter two hundred and nineteen of the public laws of nineteen hundred and twenty-one, is hereby amended by striking out the word "three," in the thirty-fifth line thereof, and inserting in place thereof the word 'five,' so that said section, as amended, shall read as follows:

'Sec. 45. Clerk hire in county office in Franklin county increased. The several county treasurers shall pay weekly to the clerks employed by the several officials in their respective counties the wages to which they may be entitled and shall take their individual receipts therefor. County officials for whom provision for clerk hire may be made, shall certify to the county treasurer the names of the clerks and the weekly wages at which they may be employed. Clerks shall be allowed a vacation not exceeding two weeks in any one year without loss of pay. The total sums to be paid annually to such clerks as wages shall not exceed the following:

'Androscoggin county; for clerks in the office of register of deeds, fifteen hundred dollars; for clerks in the office of register of probate, one thousand and forty dollars; for clerks in the office of clerk of courts, seven hundred and eighty dollars.

'Aroostook county; for clerks in the office of register of deeds of the northern district, one thousand dollars; for clerks in the office of register of deeds for the southern district, twenty-four hundred dollars; for clerks in the office of register of probate, seven hundred and eighty dollars; for clerks in the office of clerk of courts, twenty-six hundred dollars; for clerks in the office of the county attorney, six hundred dollars; for clerks in the office of county treasurer, three hundred dollars; for expenses of clerk of courts and his subordinates while attending sessions of supreme judicial courts at Caribou, such sums as allowed by courts.

'Cumberland county; for clerks in the office of register of deeds, thirtyeight hundred and fifty-two dollars; deputy register of deeds, eleven hundred and forty-four dollars; for clerks in the office of register of probate, thirty-two hundred and seventy-two dollars; for clerks in the office of clerk of courts, forty-three hundred and twenty-four dollars; for clerks in the office of recorder of the Portland municipal court, sixteen hundred and twelve dollars; for clerks in the office of county attorney, seven hundred and forty-two dollars; for clerks in the office of sheriff, seven hundred twenty-eight dollars; for clerks in the office of county treasurer, seven hundred and twenty-eight dollars.

'Franklin county; increase in the office of clerk of courts. For clerks in the office of register of deeds, five hundred dollars; for clerks in the office of register of probate, two hundred dollars; for clerks in the office of clerk of courts, five hundred dollars.

'Hancock county; for clerks in the office of register of deeds, fifteen hundred dollars; for clerks in the office of register of probate, six hundred and twenty-four dollars; for clerks in the office of clerk of courts, seven. hundred eighty dollars.

'Kennebec county; for clerks in the office of register of deeds, twentythree hundred dollars; for clerks in the office of register of probate, seven hundred and eighty dollars; for clerks in the office of clerk of courts, fifteen hundred dollars.

'Knox county; for clerks in the office of register of deeds, seven hundred and eighty dollars; for clerks in the office of register of probate, five hundred and seventy-two dollars; for clerks in the office of clerk of courts, six hundred and twenty-four dollars.

'Lincoln county; for clerks in the office of register of deeds, four hundred dollars; for clerks in the office of register of probate, one hundred sixty dollars; for clerks in the office of clerk of courts, two hundred dollars.

'Oxford county; for clerks in the office of register of deeds, six hundred and twenty-four dollars, and such additional amount as may be authorized by the county commissioners; for clerks in the office of the register of probate, four hundred dollars; for clerks in the office of the clerk of courts, six hundred dollars.

'Penobscot county; for clerks in the office of register of deeds, two thousand and eighty dollars; for clerks in the office of register of probate, fifteen hundred dollars; for clerks in the office of the clerk of courts, twenty-two hundred and fifty dollars; for clerks in the office of county attorney, six hundred dollars.

'Piscataquis county; for clerks in the office of register of deeds, seven hundred and twenty-eight dollars; for clerks in the office of register of probate, three hundred dollars; for clerks in the office of clerk of courts, seven hundred and eighty dollars.

'Sagadahoc county; for clerks in the office of register of deeds, eleven hundred and seventy dollars; for clerks in the office of register of probate, seven hundred and eighty dollars; for clerks in the office of clerk of courts, seven hundred and eighty dollars.

'Somerset county; for clerks in the office of register of deeds, fifteen hundred dollars; for clerks in the office of register of probate, five hundred dollars; for clerks in the office of clerk of courts, ten hundred and forty dollars.

'Waldo county; for clerks in the office of register of deeds, eleven hundred and forty-four dollars; for clerks in the office of register of probate, two hundred dollars; for clerks in the office of clerk of courts, five hundred dollars.

'Washington county; for clerks in the office of register of deeds, seven hundred and eighty dollars; for clerks in the office of register of probate, seven hundred and eighty dollars; after January first, nineteen hundred and twenty-three, four hundred dollars; for clerks in the office of clerk of courts, seven hundred and eighty dollars; for expenses of clerk of courts and his subordinates while attending session of supreme judicial court at Calais, such sums as may be allowed by the court.

'York county; for clerks in the office of register of deeds, two thousand dollars; for clerks in the office of register of probate, seventeen hundred and fifty dollars; for clerks in the office of clerk of courts, seventeen hundred and fifty dollars.

'All acts and parts of acts inconsistent with this act are hereby repealed.'

Chapter 3.

An Act to Amend Section One of Chapter Sixty-two of the Revised Statutes as Amended by Chapter Forty-eight of the Public Laws of Nineteen Hundred and Nineteen, as further Amended by Chapter One Hundred and One of the Public Laws of Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-one, Relating to Corporations for Literary, Charitable, Educational and Other Purposes.

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine, as follows:

R. S., c. 62, sec. 1; 1919, c. 48; 1921, c. 101; relating to organization of corporations for literary, charitable, educational and other purposes, amended. Section one of chapter sixty-two of the revised statutes, as amended by chapter forty-eight of the public laws of nineteen hundred and nineteen, as further amended by chapter one hundred and one of the public laws of nineteen hundred and twenty-one, is hereby amended by inserting in the ninth line thereof after the word "Post" and before the word "as" the words 'as an American Legion Post,' so that said section, as amended, shall read as follows:

'Sec. 1. American Legion Post, added. When seven or more persons desire to be incorporated as proprietors of a social, military, literary, scientific or county law library; as a Masonic lodge or chapter of any order or degree; as a Masonic association consisting of members of different orders or degrees; as a lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows; as a lodge of the Knights of Pythias; as a tribe of the Improved Order of Red Men; as a division of the Sons of Temperance; as a tent of the Rechabites: as a grange of Patrons of Husbandry; as a Council of the Sovereigns of Industry; as a Grand Army Post; as an American Legion Post; as a relief or benefit association for mutual assistance; as a monument or memorial association; as a society to promote temperance; as a village improvement
