An Act to Amend Section Thirty-seven of Chapter One Hundred and Seventeen of the Revised Statutes, as Amended by Section One of Chapter One Hundred and Ninety-four of the Public Laws of Nineteen Hundred and Seventeen and by Chapter Two Hundred and Fourteen of the Public Laws of Nineteen Hundred and Nineteen and by Chapter Two Hundred and Nineteen of the Public Laws of Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-one, Relating to the Salary of County Attorney of Lincoln County. Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine, as follows: R. S., c. 117, sec. 37; P. L., 1917, c. 194; 1919, c. 214; 1921, c. 219; relating to salaries of county attorneys, amended. Section thirty-seven of chapter one hundred and seventeen of the revised statutes, as amended by section one of chapter one hundred and ninety-four of the public laws of nineteen hundred and seventeen, as further amended by chapter two hundred and fourteen of the public laws of nineteen hundred and nineteen, as still further amended by chapter two hundred and nineteen of the public laws of nineteen hundred and twenty-one, is hereby amended by striking out the words "five hundred dollars" in the eleventh line thereof and inserting therefor the words 'seven hundred dollars,' so that said section, as amended, shall read as follows: 'Sec. 37. Salary in Lincoln county increased to $700. County attorneys of the several counties shall receive annual salaries from the state treasury in monthly payments on the last day of each month, as follows: Androscoggin, fifteen hundred dollars, Aroostook, fifteen hundred dollars, Franklin, five hundred dollars, Hancock, seven hundred and fifty dollars, Kennebec, fourteen hundred dollars, Knox, seven hundred dollars, Lincoln, seven hundred dollars, Oxford, nine hundred dollars, Penobscot, eighteen hundred dollars, Piscataquis, seven hundred dollars, Sagadahoc, seven hundred dollars, Somerset, eight hundred and fifty dollars, Waldo, five hundred dollars, Washington, nine hundred dollars, York, twelve hundred dollars, CHAP. 110 and no other fees, costs or emoluments shall be allowed them. The assistant county attorney for the county of Cumberland, twelve hundred dollars. He shall hold his office during the term of the county attorney by whom he was appointed, subject to removal at any time by the justice of the superior court for said county.' An Act to Amend Paragraph Two of Section Forty-five of Chapter One Hundred and Seventeen of the Revised Statutes, as Amended by Chapter One Hundred and Fifty-three of the Public Laws of Nineteen Hundred and Seventeen and by Chapter Two Hundred and Nineteen of the Public Laws of Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-one, Relating to Clerk Hire in the Androscoggin County Registry of Deeds. Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine, as follows: R. S., c. 117, sec. 45; P. L., 1917, c. 153; 1921, c. 219; relating to clerk hire in county offices, amended. The second paragraph of section fortyfive of chapter one hundred and seventeen of the revised statutes, as amended by chapter one hundred and fifty-three of the public laws of nineteen hundred and seventeen, as amended by chapter two hundred and nineteen of the public laws of nineteen hundred and twenty-one, is hereby amended by striking out the words "fifteen hundred dollars" in the second line thereof and substituting therefor the words 'eighteen hundred dollars,' so that said second paragraph, as amended, shall read as follows: 'Androscoggin County: Allowance in office of register of deeds, increased to $1,800. For clerks in the office of register of deeds, eighteen hundred dollars; for clerks in the office of register of probate, one thousand and forty dollars; for clerks in the office of clerk of courts, seven hundred and eighty dollars.' An Act to Amend Section Forty-four of Chapter One Hundred and Seventeen of the Revised Statutes, as Amended by Chapter Two Hundred and Nineteen of the Public Laws of Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-one, Relating to Salary of the Treasurer of York County. Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine, as follows: R. S., c. 117, sec. 44; P. L., 1921, c. 219; relating to salaries of county treasurers, amended. Section forty-four of chapter one hundred and seventeen of the revised statutes as amended by chapter two hundred and nineteen of the public laws of nineteen hundred and twenty-one is hereby amended by striking out the whole of the twentieth line in said section, CHAP. 112 and inserting in lieu thereof the following words: 'York, eleven hundred dollars,' so that said section, as amended, shall read as follows: 'Sec. 44. Salary in York county increased to $1,100. County treasurers in the several counties shall receive annual salaries from the treasuries of the counties in monthly payments paid on the last day of each month, as follows: 'Androscoggin, eighteen hundred dollars, 'Aroostook, eight hundred dollars, 'Cumberland, two thousand dollars, 'Franklin, four hundred dollars, 'Sagadahoc, five hundred dollars, 'Somerset, six hundred dollars, 'York, eleven hundred dollars. An Act to Amend Chapter Two Hundred and Twenty-two of the Public Laws of Nineteen Hundred and Nineteen, Relating to Fees of Constables. Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine, as follows: P. L., 1919, c. 222; relating to fees of sheriffs and their deputies, amended. Chapter two hundred and twenty-two of the public laws of nineteen hundred and nineteen is hereby amended by adding to said chapter the following paragraph: 'Constables allowed same fees in civil cases as deputy sheriffs. For any of the above enumerated services in civil cases which a constable may legally perform he shall receive the same fees as are provided above for deputy sheriffs.' Approved March 28, 1923. CHAP. 113 Chapter 113. An Act to Amend Sections One and Five of Chapter One Hundred and Sixty-nine of the Public Laws of Nineteen Hundred and Nineteen, as Amended by Chapter One Hundred and Eighty-three of the Public Laws of Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-one, Relating to the Support of Dependents of Soldiers, Sailors and Marines. Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine, as follows: Sec. 1. P. L., 1919, c. 169, sec. 1; 1921, c. 183, authorizing towns to raise money for relief of dependents of soldiers and sailors, amended. Section one of chapter one hundred and sixty-nine of the public laws of nineteen hundred and nineteen, as amended by chapter one hundred and eightythree of the public laws of nineteen hundred and twenty-one, is hereby amended, by striking out the words "who served in the world war" in the fifth and sixth lines thereof and inserting in lieu thereof the words 'killed in battle or dying or becoming disabled as a result of the casualties of war, or of sickness contracted in the line of his duty and not of his own fault during the world war,' and by adding after the word "who" in the seventeenth line the words 'was or,' and by striking out all of said section after the word "marine" in the eighteenth line thereof and inserting in lieu thereof the following: 'Any person entitled to receive aid hereunder shall not forfeit the same by reason of temporary absence from the state,' so that said section shall read as follows: 'Sec. 1. Relief limited to dependents of those killed in battle or dying or becoming disabled as result of casualties of war, or sickness contracted in line of duty. The cities, towns and plantations in this state shall raise money by taxation or otherwise to be applied to relieve the necessitous circumstances of the wife, children under the age of sixteen years, the infirm and dependent father, mother or other member of the family incapable of self-maintenance, of any soldier, sailor, or marine killed in battle or dying or becoming disabled as a result of the casualties of war or of sickness contracted in the line of his duty and not of his own fault, during the world war; provided, that on April first, nineteen hundred and seventeen, such soldier, sailor, or marine was a resident of this state. The money so raised shall be paid directly to the dependents entitled thereto under the provisions of this act, or to the parent or legal guardian of any such dependents who are minors or under guardianship, by the municipal officers of the cities, towns and plantations wherein such dependents respectively reside, in sums not exceeding four dollars a week, to relieve the necessitous circumstances of the wife, infirm and dependent father or mother of such soldier, sailor, or marine, and a sum not exceeding one dollar and fifty cents a week to relieve the necessitous circumstances of each child under the age of sixteen years or other member of the family incapable of self-maintenance who was or is dependent upon such soldier, CHAP. 114 sailor, or marine. Any person entitled to receive aid hereunder shall not forfeit the same by reason of temporary absence from the state.' Sec. 2. P. L., 1919, c. 169, sec. 5; 1921, c. 183; relating to filing of accounts in connection with aid furnished, amended. Section five of said chapter one hundred and sixty-nine, as amended by chapter one hundred and eighty-three of the public laws of nineteen hundred and twenty-one, is hereby amended, by striking out the whole of said section, and substituting therefor the following: 'Sec. 5. Accounts to be filed with governor and council within a reasonable time after the first days of July and January. Such accounts shall be made up to the first days of July and January in each year, and shall be filed with the governor and council within a reasonable time thereafter. If approved, such accounts shall be paid by the state, from the appropriation for soldiers' pensions, to the city, town, or plantation whose claim has been thus established.' Approved March 28, 1923. Chapter 114. An Act Relating to the Expenditures of the Department of Public Schools. Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine, as follows: Sec. 1. Expenses of school department to be deducted from school fund. All expenditures of the department of public schools, including salaries and general office expenses, shall be taken from the state school fund. Sec. 2. All specific appropriations to be deducted from school fund. Before distribution to the cities and towns, there shall be deducted from the state school fund all sums appropriated by existing laws for specific purposes, together with all sums appropriated by the eighty-first legislature for specific purposes. Sec. 3. Inconsistent acts repealed. All acts and parts of acts inconsistent with this act are hereby repealed. Approved March 28, 1923. |
