that at the name of Jesus* every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. -Phil. ii. 5-11.

"Submit to the authority of Jesus;" for "name" imports power, Acts iii. 6; iv. 7.

"

III. The Lord's bounty and grace. The LORD upholdeth all that fall, up all those that be bowed

And raiseth

down.

The eyes of all wait upon thee;

And thou givest them their meat in

due season.

Thou openest thine hand,

And satisfiest the desire of every liv

ing thing.

The LORD is righteous in all his

ways,

And holy in all his works.

The LORD is nigh unto all them that

call upon him,

To all that call upon him in truth. He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him:

He also will hear their cry, and will save them.

The LORD preserveth all them that love him:

But all the wicked will he destroy.

My mouth shall speak the praise of the LORD:

And let all flesh bless his holy name for ever and ever.-Psa. cxlv. 14–21.

IV. Abiding in Christ.—The sons of God.

And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming. If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.

Behold, what manner of love* the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.-1 John ii. 28, 29; iii. 1—3.

"How vast a proof of love!"-Bloomfield. + Approveth.

V. God's commands and invitations to the rebellious Jews.

Wash

you, make

you clean;

Put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes;

Cease to do evil; learn to do well; Seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, Judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD:

Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow;

Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

If ye be willing and obedient,

Ye shall eat the good of the land:
But if
ye refuse and rebel,

Ye shall be devoured with the sword: For the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.-Isa. i. 16—20.

VI. Duties of children and fathers,
servants and masters.

:

Children, obey your parents in all things for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.

Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not

with eyeservice,* as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: and whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.

Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.-Col. iii. 20-25; iv. 1.

* Merely when watched.

VII. Prophecy of Christ.

[See Luke iv. 16-21.]

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; Because the LORD hath anointed me to

preach good tidings unto the meek; He hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
