not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.

And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.

I tell you, this man went down to his house justified* rather than the other for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.-Luke xviii. 9-14.

*See Rom. v. 1.

XXXV. Envy not, but trust in the Lord. Fret not thyself because of evildoers, Neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.

For they shall soon be cut down like

the grass,

And wither as the green herb.

Trust in the LORD, and do good;

So shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.

Delight thyself also in the LORD; And he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

Commit thy way unto the LORD;* Trust also in him; and he shall bring

it to pass.

And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light,

And thy judgment as the noonday.— Psa. xxxvii. 1—6.

*Or, roll thy way upon the LORD, Margin.

XXXVI.

Christ the Good Shepherd.

I am the Good Shepherd: the Good Shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and

the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep. I am the Good Shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life* for the sheep.

And other sheep I have,† which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one Shepherd.-John x. 11-16.

Voluntarily.

+ The Gentiles, Isa. lvi. 8. Greek, "flock."

XXXVII. Patient waiting on God. Rest in the LORD,* and wait patiently

for him:

Fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way,

Because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.

Or be silent to the LORD, Margin.

Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: Fret not thyself in any wise to do evil. For evildoers shall be cut off:

But those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth.

For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be:

Yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.

But the meek shall inherit the earth;

*

And shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.-Psa. xxxvii.

7-11.

*See Matt. v. 5; Subject viii.

XXXVIII. The apostle Paul directs Timothy to pray for others.-The Mediator.

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet

and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one Mediator* between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; who gave himself a ransom† for all, to be testified in due time.‡-1 Tim. ii. 1-6.

A mediator is one who goes between two parties. A price paid for the redemption of a captive. To the most distant regions of the world."-Doddridge.

XXXIX.

The excellence of praise, and reasons for it.

Praise ye the LORD:

For it is good to sing praises unto our God;

For it is pleasant; and praise is

comely.*

The LORD doth build up

* Proper and becoming.
