FLINT CASTLE. 1280. FLINT CASTLE was most probably built by Edward I., about The remains stand a little to the north-east of the town, on the summit of a rock of freestone. It is a square building, with round towers at three of the corners, and at the fourth a round tower of much larger dimensions, separated by a deep. moat from the rest of the building, with which it communicated by a drawbridge. This large tower constituted the keep, or donjon of the castle; and from its situation, and the great thickness of the walls, was almost impregnable. It is supposed that the low-water channel of the Dee once ran close under the castle walls, and there are still in some parts the rings to which ships were moored. |
