FLINT CASTLE.

1280.

FLINT CASTLE was most probably built by Edward I., about The remains stand a little to the north-east of the town, on the summit of a rock of freestone. It is a square building, with round towers at three of the corners, and at the fourth a round tower of much larger dimensions, separated by a deep. moat from the rest of the building, with which it communicated by a drawbridge.

This large tower constituted the keep, or donjon of the castle; and from its situation, and the great thickness of the walls, was almost impregnable. It is supposed that the low-water channel of the Dee once ran close under the castle walls, and there are still in some parts the rings to which ships were moored.

RICHARD II.

Through brazen trumpet send the breath of parle
