INTRODUCTION.

IN venturing to publish the following discourses, I feel called on to offer some explanation of or apology for doing so. They are in no sense controversial ; I am sensible that they can advance no claim to originality; and, most likely, they will prove devoid, in a great measure, at least, of what is understood by the term popularity.

They have been composed with the view of placing in a distinct Scriptural light, and in a manner level to the understanding of ordinarily well educated persons, a very prominent and vitally important phase of "the Christian verity." They have been composed under a strong conviction that the "light and life" in Christ Jesus, which it has been my humble endeavour to illustrate, do not receive generally, even from honest and sincere professors of Christ, that acceptation and practical application to their own work of salvation which are essential to realise their true value and bliss.
