T has often occurred to the Author, that IT as it could not be without a fpecial defign that fo great a portion of the Holy Scriptures was caft into an Hiftorical form, the principal reafon of this must be, that it appeared to Him, who "knoweth our frame," the most proper mode of conveying inftruction, even on thofe fubjects in which we are interested for eternity. Under the forcible impreffion of this idea, in the following work. the Author engaged Whatever Whatever may be faid with respect to the execution, the plan at least has the recommendation of novelty. For, as far as he knows, the ground which he has taken has been hitherto unoccupied. It was not originally meant, that the two Differtations prefixed fhould be published in connexion with the work on Sacred Hiftory. They were written at a time, when the greateft exertions were made to diffeminate the principles |
