(Extract from Clause 42, Auxiliary and Reserve Forces Circulars, 1878.)

"2. These Regulations, made by the Secretary of State for War under the provisions of Section 16 of the Volunteer Act, 1863, supersede the Volunteer Regulations, 1863, and all Circulars and Orders issued up to the date of the present Circular inclusive (April 18th, 1878), so far as they relate to or affect the Volunteer Force. They will be strictly observed until altered by proper authority.

3. Any alteration which may become necessary hereafter will be notified in the Auxiliary and Reserve Forces Circulars, which are issued quarterly. Orders which will not admit of delay until the issue of the quarterly Circulars will be issued in a special Auxiliary Forces Circular, and will be repeated in the next quarterly Circular.

4. These Regulations, and the Circulars subsequently issued, will be kept carefully noted up by Officers concerned. All articles or paragraphs which may be cancelled will be ruled out in ink, and the authority for the cancelling noted in the margin."
