2 The faith we need to serve Thee well
Thou dost Thyself supply-
That faith which sanctifies the heart,
And lifts the soul on high.

3 No outward show can e'er atone
For want of grace within :
The secret prayer, the lowly sigh,
Thy favour best can win.

4 For then the heart and lips can join
To yield Thy meed of praise,
And with a free and cheerful voice
Salvation's song can raise.

5 O Thou, Who dost the proud abhor,
And humble souls approve,
That we in holy faith may grow
Our sinful pride remove.

6 To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost
Our praises shall ascend,
For on the Blood of Christ alone
Our faithful hearts depend.

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY. (GOSPEL AND FOR a funeral.)

When our heads are bowed with woe, &c. (See the Hymn under Burial Service.) (S. Asaph.)

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER

TRINITY.

UNITY.

(EPISTLE.)

O KING of Salem! King of peace !
Bid strife among Thy subjects cease:
One is our Faith and One our Lord,
One Body, Spirit, Hope, Reward.

2 One God and Father of us all,
On Whom Thy Church and people call:
O may we One Communion be,
One with each other, One in Thee !

3 O Holy Father, Holy Son,
And Holy Spirit, Three in one,
Thy grace devoutly we implore,
Thy name be praised for evermore.

(Also Hymn 28.)

(GOSPEL.)

MAKE me, Lord, a holy child,
Lowly, teachable, and mild;
my words and looks to be
Childlike in humility.

In

2 Grant I may obtain such grace Here to love the lowest place; And, that I may be Thine own, Meekness learn of Thy dear Son.

3 They who now sit lowest here,
When the Master shall appear,
He shall bid them higher rise
And be highest in the skies.
4 They are most like in the sky
To the Son of God most high:
For He deign'd on earth to be
Childlike in humility.

EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY.

(GOSPEL.)

(Hymn 58.)

SUNDAY NEXT BEFORE ADVENT.

As o'er the past my memory strays,
Why heaves the secret sigh?

'Tis that I mourn departed days
Still unprepar'd to die.

2 The world and worldly things belov'd
My anxious thoughts employ'd;
And time unhallowed, unimprov'd,
Presents a fearful void.

3 Yet, Holy Father! wild despair
Chase from my labouring breast;
Thy grace it is which prompts the
That grace can do the rest.

prayer,

4 My life's brief remnant all be Thine!
And when Thy sure decree

Bids me this fleeting breath resign
Oh, speed my soul to Thee!

GRATITUDE TO GOD.
(Psalm cxlvi. 1.)

WHEN all Thy mercies, O my God,
My rising soul surveys;
Transported with the view, I'm lost
In wonder, love, and praise.

2 Ere yet my feeble thoughts had learnt.
To form themselves in prayer,
To all my weak complaints and cries
Thy mercy lent an ear.

3 When in the slippery paths of youth With heedless steps I ran,

I

Thine arm unseen conveyed me safe, And led me up to man.

4 When worn by sickness, oft hast Thou With health renew'd my face, And when in sin and sorrow sunk

Reviv'd soul with grace.

my

5 Ten thousand thousand precious gifts
My daily thanks employ;
Nor is the least a cheerful heart,
That tastes those gifts with joy.

6 Through every period of my life
Thy goodness I'll pursue;

And after death in distant worlds
May I the theme renew.

95 THE HOLY SACRAMENTS AND OTHER RITES AND OFFICES OF THE

[blocks in formation]

ONCE with water we were washed
We were set CHRIST'S Church within,
Born again by His good SPIRIT,
And forgiven all our sin.

2 But though born again and granted
Strength from Christ to do the right,
Still remains our sinful nature,
Weaken'd, not extinguished quite.

3 Still the new life needs renewing
Day by day, and hour by hour,
Still the evil needs subduing
By the Holy Spirit's power.

4 We are soldiers doing battle,

Day by day, and hour by hour,
Each one with his own temptations
Striving in the Spirit's power.

5 Still that Spirit stronger groweth
In the hearts that hold It fast;
He will help us, teach us, crown us,
More than conquerors at last.
