ADESTE FIDELES.

APPROACH, all ye faithful,
Joyful and triumphant ;
Oh, come ye, oh, come ye,
To Bethlehem !
Hail ye the New Born,
King and Lord of angels;
Oh, come ye and adore Him,
Oh, come ye and adore Him,
Oh, come, all ye faithful,
And worship the Lord!

[blocks in formation]

4 The Son everlasting, Sent of the Father, Born at this season,

The Word made flesh!

Glory to Jesus,

Sing we triumphant !
Oh, come ye &c.

(With the music 1d. Masters.)

THE CIRCUMCISION AND NAMING OF CHRIST, OR NEW YEAR'S DAY.

S. LUKE II. 21, WHEN EIGHT DAYS WERE ACCOMPLISHED FOR THE CIRCUMCISING OF THE CHILD, HIS NAME WAS CALLED JESUS.

38

THE year begins with Thee

And Thou beginn'st with woe,
To let the world of sinners see
That blood for sin must flow.

2 Those who would reap in love
Must sow in holy fear;

So life a winter's morn may prove
To a bright endless year.

THE HOLY NAME OF JESUS.
(Acts iv. 12. Tune, S. James'.)
JESU, the very thought of Thee
With sweetness fills the breast;
But sweeter far Thy face to see,
And in Thy presence rest.

2 Tongue never spake, ear never heard,
Never from heart o'erflowed,

A dearer name, a sweeter word
Than Jesus, Son of God.

3 O hope of every contrite heart,
To penitents how kind,

To those who seek, how good Thou art;
But what to those who find?

4 Ah! this no tongue can utter; this
No mortal page can show;
The love of Jesus, what it is,
None but His lov'd ones know.
5 Jesu, our only joy be Thou,
As Thou our prize wilt be;
Jesu, be Thou our glory now,
And through eternity.

(S. Bernard.)

LORD of mercy and of might,
Of mankind the life and light,
Maker, Teacher, Infinite,

Holy Jesu, hear and save!

2 Thou, when sin's tremendous doom
Gave man over to the tomb,
Didst not scorn the Virgin's womb,
Holy Jesu, hear and save!

3 Mighty Maker, Saviour mild,
Humbled to a mortal Child,
Captive, beaten, bound, reviled,
Holy Jesu, hear and save!

THE EPIPHANY.

(Is. lx. 3; Ps. xcviii. 3, 4.)

GLORY to God Who sent His star
To shed its hopeful beams afar,
As once His fiery pillar's ray
Led Israel on their toilsome way.

2 The first-fruits of the Gentile race,
They sought the Saviour's dwelling place,
And knelt before the Babe Divine,
Led thither by th' unerring sign.
3 O may we too with offerings meet
Be found at our Redeemer's feet,
With richer gifts than their's of old,
Of spices rare and hoarded gold.
4 We, by the chosen nation's sin,
On the true Vine are grafted in;
Our hearts' true homage let us give
To Him Whose mercy bids us live.

(Is. lx. 8.)

WHO are these that come from far
Led by Jacob's rising star?
Lo they gather like a cloud,
Or, as doves their windows crowd!
2 Strangers these to Zion come,
There to seek a peaceful home:
Zion wonders at the sight,
Zion feels a strange delight.

(Cleveland Psalter.)

L. M.

(Ps. lxxii.)

JESUS shall reign where'er the sun
Doth his successive journeys run;

His kingdom stretch from shore to shore,
Till suns shall rise and set no more.
