PREFACE, THESE thoughts have been thrown together in the closing days of the author's life, with the hope of not living quite uselessly, while God was so gracious as to prolong life beyond his expectation. They are published, not as a digested treatise, but as materials which, it may be hoped, more discriminating writers may profit by, and which may not in the meantime be without their use. There can be no doubt that the field is open to advancing inquiry into what God has said upon the matters treated of, and that they involve some of the most important duties and enjoyments of a Christian's holy and happy walk with Him. It is the author's earnest hope that he has spoken only from Holy Scripture, true Christian experience, and the teaching of the ever blessed Spirit of God. The Hebrew and Greek words are all deferred to the notes, and the body of the work may be continuously and intelligently read without them. |
