PREFACE.

Small as is this little book, it contains nearly the whole of the devotional passages found in the Old Testament. It has had its origin, firstly in the belief, that apart from the sacred offices and public services of the Church, Scriptural Prayers, without modification or abridgement are replete with allusions and references interruptive of the unity and simplicity of modern devotional piety; secondly in the hope that the brevity of these prayers, and the beauty which they derive from their divinely inspired authors, may commend them to the adoption of persons so occupied with business as to have little time to set apart for the daily worship of God; and thirdly in an ardent wish on the part of the Compiler, to contribute something, were it only a single brick, towards the re-building the Church of the living God in this realm of England.

The version of the Holy Bible followed in this little book is the Douay Translation of the Latin Vulgate. This is very necessary to be remembered by those who may wish to test the fidelity with which the prayers breathe the spirit of their sacred originals. In the Church of England translation of the Bible, the 9th Psalm is divided into two; and hence from the 9th to the 147th Psalm, each Psalm in the Protestant version is
