PONT TOURNANT DE CARONTE

EXPOSÉ. Le pont tournant, établi à la traversée du canal en construction de Marseille au Rhône, découvre une passe navigable de 42 m. 724 de largeur normale, soit 43 m. 256 suivant le biais de 99° que forme l'axe de la ligne avec celui du canal (pl. 3, fig. 59 à 61).

La hauteur libre de 23 mètres réservée entre le niveau de la mer et le dessous des poutres, permet le passage, sous le pont fermé, des tartanes de pêche et autres bâtiments qui fréquentent ordinairement le canal,

Indépendamment des manœuvres nécessaires à son entretien, il ne sera donc ouvert qu'à intervalles éloignés: 8 ou 10 fois

par an.

En raison de la rareté des manœuvres et de l'intensité du mouvement des trains sur le viaduc de Caronte, on avait pensé tout d'abord à placer le pont tournant dans les mêmes conditions qu'un pont fixe, en ce qui concerne les appuis.

Il aurait donc reposé sur chacune des deux piles-culées (1) par l'intermédiaire de 2 secteurs de calage permettant la dilatation des poutres, et, sur la pile de rotation, par l'intermédiaire de 2 appareils d'ancrage articulés.

Cette disposition aurait imposé :

a) La rotation du pont sur un pivot placé au centre de la pile;
