Hughes Charles,

NOTICE TO ADVERTISERS.-The GREAT ADVANTAGES We offer to advertisers in the Bibliopolist, cannot, we think, be conceded to any other similar publication. First, our terms are low; second, we are willing to take, at the publishers' net prices, Books in exchange for ADVERTISEMENTS, The rates for advertising, mentioned above, are cash rates. Rates, in books at net prices, are as follows: One page, $16.00; half page, $9.00; quarter page, $5.00. The same arrangements will be made with dealers in secord hand books, giving us the privilege of selection. With such an arrangement as this, publishers and booksellers can pay, at a minimum cost, what would otherwise be required in cash. For a succession of insertions, the rates will be reduced. The journal is circulated among live book buyers, and those who have books to sell will present them usefully through the Bibliopolist.

This arrangement will also apply with English, French and German Publishers and Booksellers.

BACK NUMBERS.-J. Sabin & Sons will pay 25 cts. each for No. 4, 1869, of the American Bibliopolist, if sent in good order.

All Advertisements, Subscriptions, and Literary communications for the AMERICAN BIBLIOPOLIST must be addressed to J. SABIN & SONS,

84 Nassau Street, New York.

Next in order we have the "extensive and valuable Library formed by the Hon. George H. Holliday, of Carlinville, Ill." The catalogue makes 247 pages, and includes a large collection of books purchased at very high prices, and indicates clearly that the bookseller had a good deal to do with forming this Library. A glance at the index will at once exhibit the miscellaneous character of the collection. We have, for instance, not a little theology, but in order to balance that there is about an equal supply of facetiæ, some of it being of a decidedly salacious character; Greek and Latin classics are, more than counterbalanced by a supply of fiction. Piety and biography are about equally distributed. There is a liberal supply of so-called privately printed books.

We

say

so-called because generally they are not privately printed. For how can a book be privately printed concerning which circulars are issued to the elect few (?), advising them that fifty or more copies are printed for their special edification, and requesting them to subscribe. These seemed to meet with much disfavor, for they sold at very low prices. Many books printed by Mr. Munsell were said to be printed on India paper and to be one of five copies so printed. We bought some, and found they were simply Mr. Munsell's

proof sheets, or office copies, which copies are got up carelessly and not usually sold, being regarded as worthless. These were carefully bound in half morocco by Bradstreets, and when Mr. Holliday bought them the books were not the only things sold.

Many other departments are about equally represented, the whole forming a collection of fine books; but it would be difficult to decide from the catalogue what particular intention Mr. Holliday had except to possess a lot of books. There is no evidence of scholarly

design, but an abundant testimony that he

permitted the bookseller to supply him expensive, but not always valuable, books. LOT 1. A Call from Death to Life. Sold for $2.00

i

We were wondering why this should be placed first in the catalogue. It belongs in the S's, but the curious stories relative to Mr. Holliday's supposed descent over the Falls of Niagara may have suggested it.

LOT 3. ADAMS' Works.

10 vols.

Large paper, $11.25

Large paper copies seem to have reached the lowest possible rates. All through the sale they sold at low prices.

LOT 13. Eumean Silviers. 1486, $2.12

Printed by Koberger, the printer of the Nuremburg Chronicle. Almost given away.

LOT 18. Agrippose of the Varietie and
Uncertaintie of Arts and Sciences.
Printed at London in 1475.
$4.00

A very low price. The reference to the Retrospective Review did not help it much. LOT 29. Altar Service Books.
