which have re'aped are en'tered in'to the e'ars of the Lo'rd of saba'oth. 5 Ye have lived in pleas'ure on the earth, and been wan'ton; ye have nour'ished your hea'rts, as in a day of slaughter. 6 Ye have condem'ned 'and' kill'ed the just'; and he doth not resist' you. 7 Be pa'tient therefore, breth'ren, un'to the com'ing of the Lord. Behold, the hus'bandman wa'iteth for the prec'ious fruit of the earth', and hath long pa'tience for it, until' he receive the early and lat'ter ra'jn. 8 Be ye also pa'tient; stab'lish your hearts for the com'ing of the Lo'rd dra'weth ni'gh. 9 Grudg'e not one against' anoth'er, breth'ren, lest ye be condem'ned: behold, the Judge stan'deth befo're the do'or. 10 Ta'ke, my breth'ren, the proph'ets, who have spoken in the name of the Lo'rd, for an exam'ple of suf'fering afflic'tion, and pa'tience. Behold, we count them happy which endu're. Ye have heard of the pa'tience of Jo'b, and have seen the end of the Lo'rd; that the Lo'rd is ver'y pitiful, and of ten'der mer'cy. 12 But above a'll things, my breth'ren, swea'r not, ne'ither by heaven, neither by the earth', ne'ither by an'y oth'er o'ath: but let your yea' be yea'; and 'your' na'y, na'y; lest ye fa'll in'to condemna'tion. 13 Is an'y amon'g you afflic'ted? let him pra'y. Is an'y mer'ry? let him sing psalms. 14 Is an'y sick' among you? let him ca'll for the elders of the church'; and let them pray o'ver him, anoin'ting him with oil in the na'me of the Lord: 15 And the prayer of fa'ith shall sa've the sick', and the Lo'rd shall ra'ise him up'; and if he have commit'ted sin's, they shall be forgiven him. 16 Confess' 'your' faults one to another, and pra'y one for another, that ye may be he'aled. The effec'tual fer'vent pra'yer of a right'eous man availeth much'. 17 Eli'as was a man subject to like pass'ions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not ra'in: and it ra'ined not on the earth' by the spa'ce of three years and six month's. 18 And he prayed again', and the heav'en gave ra'in, and the earth' brought fo'rth her fruit. 19 Breth'ren, if any of you do er'r from the truth, and one convert' him; Let him kno'w, that he which conver'teth the sin'ner from the error of his wa'y shall sa've a so'ul from death', and shall hi'de a multitude of sin's.

PETER.

CHAPTER I.

[ocr errors]

1 PETER, an apos'tle of Je'sus Chri'st, to the stra'ngers scat'tered throughout' Pon'tus, Gala'tia, Cappado'cia, A'ṣia, and Bythyn'ia, Elect' according to the foreknowledge of Go'd the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, un'to obe'dience and sprinkling of the blood' of Je'sus Chri'st: Gra'ce un'to you, and peace, be multiplied. 3 Bless'ed 'be' the Go'd and Father of our Lo'rd Je'sus Chri'st, which, according to his abun'dant mercy, hath begot'ten us again' un'to li'vely ho'pe, by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead', 4 To an inheritance incorrup'tible, and undefi'led, and that fa'deth not away, reserved in heav'en for yo'u, 5 Who are kept by the pow'er of Go'd through fa'ith un'to salva'tion, read'y to be reve'aled in the last time: 6 Wherein' ye greatly rejoice, though now' for a se'ason (if ne'ed be) ye are in heav'iness through man'ifold tem'pta'tions; 7 That the trial of your faith, being much more prec'ious than of go'ld that perisheth, though it be tried with fi're, might be found un'to pra'ise, and hon'our, and glo'ry, at the appearing of Je'sus Chri'st: 8 Whom having not se'en, ye lov'e; in' whom, though now ye se'e 'him' not, yet belie’ving, ye rejoi'ce with joy' unspeakable, and full of glo'ry: 9 Rece'iving the end' of your fa'ith, 'e'ven' the salva'tion of 'your' so'uls. 10 Of which salva'tion the prophets have enqui'red and search'ed diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should com'e' un'to you: 11 Search'ing what', or what man'ner of time, the Spirit of Chri'st which was in' them did sig'nify, when it tes'tified beforehand the suf'ferings of Chri'st, and the glory that should follow. 12 Un'to whom it was revealed, that not un'to themselves, but un'to us', they did minister the things which are now reported un'to you by them that have pre'ached the gos'pel un'to you with the Holy Gho'st sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look' in'to. 13 Wherefore gird' up the loins of your mind, be so'ber,

and hope to the end' for the gra'ce that is to be brought un'to you at the revelation of Jesus Chri'st: 14 As obe'dient chil'dren, not fash'ioning yourselves according to the fo'rmer lusts in your ignorance : 15 But as he' which hath called you is holy, so be ye ho'ly in a'll man'ner of conversa'tion; Because it is writ'ten, Be ye ho'ly; for I' am holy. 17 And if ye call on the Father, whọ without' respect of per'sons judg'eth according to every man's work', pass' the time of your so'journing here' in fe'ar: 18 Forasmuch as ye kno'w that ye were not' rede'emed with corruptible things, as silver and go'ld, from your va'in conversation 'received' by tradit'ion from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without' blem'ish and without' spot': 20 Who ver'ily was foreordained befo're the founda'tion of the world', but was man'ifest in these last times for you, 21 Who by him' do belie've in Go'd, that ra'ised him up from the dead', and gave him glory; that your fa'ith and ho'pe might be in Go'd. 22 Se'eing ye have pu'rified your so'uls in obe'ying the truth through the Spirit un'to unfe'igned lov'e of the brethren, see that ye' love one anoth'er with a pu're hea'rt fervently: 23 Be'ing bo'rn again', not of corruptible se'ed, but of in'corruptible, by the word of Go'd, which liv'eth and abi'deth for ever. 24 Fo'r a'll flesh' 'is' as grass', and all the glo'ry of man as the flower of grass. The grass with'ereth, and the flow'er thereof' fa'lleth awa'y : 25 But the word' of the Lo'rd endu'reth for ever. And this' is the word' which by the gos'pel is pre'ached un'to you.

CHAP. II. Wher'efore, la'ying asi'de a'll mal'ice, and a'll gui'le, and hypocrisies, and en'vies, and a'll e'vil-spe'akings, 2 As new'-bo'rn ba'bes, deşi're the sin'çe're milk' of the word', that ye may gro'w thereby'; 3 If so' be ye have ta'sted that the Lo'rd is' gra'cious: To whom com'ing, as un'to a living sto'ne, disallow'ed inde'ed of men', but cho'sen of Go'd, 'and' prec'ious, 5 Ye' a'lso, as li'vely sto'nes, are built up a spiritual house, an ho'lý prie'sthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, ac'ceptable to Go'd by Je'sus Chri'st. 6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scrip'ture, Behold, I lay in Si'on a chie'f co'rner-sto'ne, elect', precious and he that belie'veth on him shall not be confoun'ded. 7 Un'to yo'u therefore which belie've he is prec'ious but un'to

them' which be disobe'dient, the sto'ne which the builders disallowed, the sa'me is made the head' of the co'rner, 8 And a sto'ne of stum'bling, and a rock of offenc'e, ‘e'ven to them' which stum'ble at the word', be'ing disobe'dient; whereunto also they were appointed. 9 But ye' ‘are' a cho'sen genera'tion, a roy'al prie'sthood, an ho'ly na'tion, a peculiar people; that ye should shew fo'rth the praises of him whọ hath called you out of darkness in'to his ma'rvellous light': 10 Which in time past' 'were' not' a pe'ople, but are now' the pe'ople of Go'd: which had not obtained mer'cy, but now' ha've obtained mer'cy. 11 De'arly belov'ed, I bese'ech 'you,' as stra'ngers and pil'grims, abstain from flesh'lý lust's, which wa'r against the so'ul; 12 Having your conversa'tion hon'est among the Gen'tiles; that, whereas' they speak against' you as e'vildo'ers, they may by your' good' works, which they shall behold, glorify Go'd in the day of visitation. 13 Submit' yourselves to ev'ery o'rdinance of man' for the Lo'rd's sa'ke whether it be to the kin'g, as supre'me; 14 Or un'to gov'ernors, as un'to them that are sent by him for the pun'ishment of e'vil-do'ers, and for the praise of them that do well'. 15 Fo'r so is the will' of Go'd, that with well'-do'ing ye may put to si'lence the ignorance of fo'olish men: 16 As fre'e, and not u'sing your' lib'erty for a clo'ak of maliciousness, but as the servants of Go'd. 17 Hon'our all men.' Lov'e the brotherhood. Fe'ar Go'd. Honour the king. 18 Servants, 'be' subject to 'your' mas'ters with all fe'ar; not' o'nly to the good' and ġen'tle, but also to the fro'ward. 19 Fo'r this' 'is' thank-worthy, if a man for con'science to'ward Go'd endu're grief, suf'fering wrongfully. 20 Fo'r what glo'ry is it,' if, when ye be buf'feted for your fa'ults, ye shall ta'ke it pa'tiently? but if, when ye do well', and suffer for it,' ye take it' patiently, this is' ac'ceptable with Go'd. 21 Fo'r e'ven hereunto' were ye called: beca'use Chri'st also suf'fered for us, leaving us an exam'ple, that ye should follow his steps: 22 Who did no' sin', neither was gui'le found in his mouth': 23 Who, when he was revi'led, reviled not again'; when he suffered, he threat'ened not; but commit'ted himself to him' that judg'eth right'eously: 24 Whọ his own self' ba're our sins in his own bod'y on the tree, that we', be'ing dead' to sin's, should liv'e un'to right'eousness:

by whose stri'pes ye were he'aled. 25 Fo'r ye were as she'ep go'ing astra'y; but are now' return'ed un'to the Shepherd and Bishop of your so'uls.

CHAP. III.1 Li'kewise, ye wi'ves, 'be' in subjec'tion to your own hus'bands; that if an'y obe'y not the word', they also may without' the word be won' by the conversa'tion of the wi'ves; 2 While they behold your cha'ste conversation coup'led' with fe'ar: 3 Whose ado'rning, let it not be that out'ward 'ado'rning' of pla'iting the ha'ir, and of wearing of go'ld, or of putting on' of apparel; 4 But let it be the hid'den man of the heart, in that' which is not' corrup'tible, 'e'ven the o'rnament' of a me'ek and qui'et spirit, which is in the sight of Go'd of grea't pri'cę. 5 Fo'r after this man'ner in the old ti'me the ho'ly women also, who trus'ted in Go'd, ado'rned themselves, be'ing in subjec'tion un'to their own hus'bands: 6 Even as Sa'ra obe'yed A'braham, calling him lo'rd: whose daughters ye' are as long as ye do well', and are not afra'id with an'y amazement. 7 Li'kewise, ye hus'bands, dwell' with 'them' acco'rding to knowledge, giving hon'our un'to the wi'fe, as un'to the weaker ves'sel, and as be'ing he'irs togeth'er of the gra'ce of life; that your prayers be not hin'dered. 8 Finally, be ye' a'll of on'e mi'nd, hav'ing compass'ion one of another; love as breth'ren, 'be' pit'iful, 'be' courteous: Not ren'dering e'vil for e'vil, or ra'iling for railing but con'trariwise bless'ing; kno'wing that ye are thereunto' called, that ye should inher'it a blessing. 10 Fo'r he that will lov'e li'fe, and se'e good' days, let him refra'in his tongue from e'vil, and his lips' that they spe'ak no guile: Let him eschew' e'vil, and do good'; let him se'ęk pe'ące, and ensu'e it. 12 Fo'r the eyes of the Lo'rd 'are' o'ver the right'eous, and his ears are o'pen' un'to their prayers: but the fa'ce of the Lo'rd 'is' against' them that do e'vil. 13 And who 'is' he that will ha'rm you, if ye be followers of that which is good'? 14 But and if ye suf'fer for right'eousness' sa'ke, hap'py are ye:' and be not afra'id of their ter'ror, ne'ither be troubled; 15 But sanc'tify the Lo'rd Go'd in your hearts: and 'be' read'y always to 'give' an an'swer to ev'ery man that ask'eth you a re'ason of the ho'pe that is in' you with me'ekness and fe'ar: 16 Having a good con'science; that, whereas they spe'ak e'vil of you, as of e'vil-do'ers, they may be ashamed that falsely accu'se your good' conversation
