On the 30th day of August, 1881, WINFIELD SMITH, Esq., of Milwaukee, presented to the court the following minute and resolutions: Proceedings of the Milwaukee County Bar. At a meeting of the bar of Milwaukee county, held in the United States circuit court room on the 18th day of April, 1831, the following resolutions were presented by the Hon. WILLIAM PITT LYNDE, chairman of the committee; and after appropriate remarks on the life and services of the deceased from many members of the bar, the same were unanimously adopted: 1. That the members of this bar unite in the sincere expression of their respect for the memory of the late MATTHEW HALE CARPENTER, so long known to the community, and in an especial manner to the profession, for his great legal attainments and the remarkable grasp and vigor of his intellect, which rendered him illustrious as a constitutional lawyer in the United States senate, and made him the peer of the most eminent counsel at the bar of the highest judicial tribunal in the land. 2. That we lament his loss and cherish his memory for his genial qualities as an associate, and for his uniform courtesy to his professional brethren. 3. That we will wear the accustomed badge of mourning for thirty days. 4. That the chairman and secretary of this meeting transmit a copy of these proceedings to the family of the deceased, communicating at the same time the deep and sincere sympathy of the bar in the bereavement which they have sustained.
