PREFATORY NOTE.

THIS Volume has been compiled in obedience to the directions of the act entitled "An act to provide for the revision and compilation of the public statutes of this State," approved April 4, 1871-whereby the subscribers were appointed Commissioners "to revise, simplify, arrange and consolidate all the public acts of the Legislature of this State which are general and permanent in their nature, and which shall be in force at the time such Commissioners shall make their report."

The volume comprises not only the acts which they reported to the Legislature and which were passed by that body, since distinguished by the title Revision," but also all other public acts of a similar nature, and which are now in force. In a word, all the public statutory law of New Jersey, of a general permanent nature, existing at this date, is here collected.

In the appendixes may be found the general repealers, and also some acts omitted from their proper places.

The undersigned have had the assistance of Mr. G. D. W. VROOM and Mr. JOHN H. STEWART, in the preparation of the index, and the side and foot notes, and these gentlemen have also had the immediate supervision of the book while passing through the press.
