Then J. 18. Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and 33 called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews? 134. Pilate sends Jesus to Herod.

WHEN Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whe- A. D. 33. 6, 7 ther the man were a Galilæan. And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself 8 also was at Jerusalem at that time. And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by 9 him. Then he questioned with him in many 10 words; but he answered him nothing. And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently 11 accused him. And Herod with his men of war a Is. 53. 3. set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed

were made friends together: for before they
were at enmity between themselves.

135. Herod sends Jesus again to Pilate. Pilate
seeks to release him.

L. 23. AND Pilate, when he had called together the
13, 14 chief priests and the rulers and the people, said
unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me,
as one that perverteth the people: and, behold,
I, having examined him before you, have found
no fault in this man touching those things
15 whereof ye accuse him: no, nor yet Herod: for
I sent you to him; and, lo, 2 nothing worthy of
16 death is done unto him. I will therefore chas-
tise him, and release him.

And there was one named Barabbas, 7 which lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder 8 in the insurrection. But the chief priests and elders per- 20 suaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. The governor an- 21 swered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas. Pilate saith unto them, What 22 shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. L. 23. And he said unto them the third time, Why, 21, 22 what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go. And they cried out the more M*. 15. exceedingly, Crucify him.

THEN Pilate therefore took Jesus, and J. 19.1 scourged him. And the soldiers of the governor M. 27. took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered 27 unto him the whole band of soldiers. And they 28 stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. Ps. 69.19. But Jesus gave him no answer. © Is. 53.7. 10 Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? 11 Jesus answered, "Thou couldest have no power "at all against me, except it were given thee "from above: therefore he that delivered me 12" unto thee hath the greater sin." And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Cæsar's friend: whosoever Acts 17.7. maketh himself a king speaketh against Cæsar.

13

When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pave14 ment, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha. And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, 15 Behold your King! But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king Gen. 49. but Cæsar.
