The Open

Door. By Blanche Willis Howard, author of

"One Summer," etc. 16mo, $1.25.

The scene of this novel is laid in Germany, and the story introduces us to a German Count, who, although born to wealth, suffers a misfortune in consequence of which he practically renounces the world. Miss Howard is now living in Stuttgart, and this book is presumably a result of observation of some phases of German life.

The Peckster Professorship. By J. P. Quincy.

16m0, $1.25.

Not only an interesting and well-written, but a typical novel. . . . The story is capitally told, full of bright thought and sharp girds at the materialistic view of science, and generally speaking, of a nature to please not alone the devotees of theosophy and spiritualism, but all ... who appreciate and enjoy a good novel.” — N. Y. Tribune.

Cressy.

By Bret Harte, author of "The Luck of Roaring Camp, and Other Stories," etc. 16m0, $1.25.

There is, and has been from the beginning, a charm in Mr. Harte's writing which we have always felt, and which we have never been able to analyze. It comes as neat style as the best writing of Mr. Stevenson, and the best writing of Thackeray. . . . He interests us, he delights us, and he captures us, from first to last.-R. H. Stoddard.

The King of Folly Island, And Other People

By Sarah Orne Jewett, au16mo, $1.25.

thor of "A White Heron," "A Marsh Island," etc.
The Boston Post closes a full review by saying: "A writer in the Revue des Deux
Mondes the lady who signs herself Th. Bentzon - has declared that one of Miss
Jewett's stories is a perfectly exquisite thing of its kind.' And it is this exquisiteness
of Miss Jewett's work, its perfection in its own kind, that ... makes it delightful
to cultivated readers. Miss Jewett is unrivaled in her own domain."

The McVeys. By Joseph Kirkland, author of “Zury.”

16mo, $1.25.

"The McVeys" is regarded as a strong and effective picture of the life of the early settlers in Illinois. It is realistic in a high degree, and in it Lincoln and Douglas figure. "The court scenes in which they appear as legal adversaries," says the New York Home Journal," are especially thrilling, and add vitality to an absorbing romance."

The Despot of Broomsedge Cove.

By "Charles Egbert Craddock," author of "In the Tennessee
Mountains," "In the Clouds," etc. 16mo, $1.25.

-

The essential part, the treatment of the human problem, is characterized by real power, the power of divining motives and piercing through contradictions. — Springfield Republican.

The Guardians. An Anonymous Novel. 16mo, $1.25.

"The Guardians," which appeared without any name of author, has found interested readers whose commendations of it are worth quoting. The Boston Advertiser says: "It is an unusually clever book, every page of which is to be enjoyed, perhaps we may venture to say delighted in. The style is admirable, fresh, crisp, rapid."

John Ward, Preacher. A Novel by Margaret

Deland, author of "The Old Gar

den and Other Poems." Twenty-fifth Thousand. 12mo, $1.50.

A remarkable book, . . . of much more than common power.... The picture of all these figures is painted with a delicacy that implies no ordinary talent. The Spectator (London).

LATE TESTIMONIALS.

From CHARLES H. MORSE, Director Northwestern Conservatory of Music, Minneapolis, Minn. This is the finest book I have ever seen for congregational worship and will, I trust, mark a new era in our Protestant Church music.

From E. M. BOWMAN, Editor Weitzman Musical Theory, New York City. Allow me to thank you for the copy of "Hymns of the Faith" recently sent to me, and to say that I consider it one of the most musicianly hymn-books that has come under my observation.

From ALBERT Ross PARSONS, Organist of Dr. Hall's Church, New York.

The music of "Hymns of the Faith" is of a high order and commendable dignity. In it both sen timentality and dullness are happily avoided; and together with the standard tunes of the past, an unusual number is offered of the most excellent new tunes of the finest writers of the modern school, such as Gounod, Hopkins, Barnaby, Tours, Sullivan, etc. I am therefore convinced that congrega tions selecting, after careful examination, "Hymns of the Faith," will enjoy the collection of musie from the first and steadily grow more attached to it with use.

From Rev. W. V. W. DAVIS, Pastor of the Union Congregational Church, Worcester, Mass. I am glad to speak in approval of "Hymns of the Faith." It was chosen by our Committee, after a careful examination of all others published in both England and America. The reasons for our choice were: 1st, its fitness for stimulating congregational singing; 2d, its comprehensiveness; 34, its wise exclusions; 4th, its fine adaptations; 5th, its excellent arrangement of the Psalter for chanting. No other book seemed, also, to bring the old tunes and the new tunes into such fitting relationship as to make them appear at home in each other's company. We thoroughly enjoy the book.

From the Christian Union.

"Hymns of the Faith" is a book of exalted spirit in the conception of worship which it embodies, and in the confidence of its appeal to elevated thought in Christian people. The hymns are uniformly of high character. They are hymns of faith, not mainly of sentiment. They are in no wise wanting in that needful element; but their source is higher. Their sentiment is that which is nerved and dis ciplined by the higher vision of endurance of faith. They embody" the creed of the saints, the anthem of the blest," with a more uniform success than can be found in more than a very few hymnals. ..... Taking the book all in all, we give it a hearty welcome and bid it good-speed. It is a noble addition to our manuals of praise.

From CHAS. L. KENYON, Organist Union Congregationalist Church, Providence, R. I.

I consider it a fine collection, with music specially well adapted to the sentiment of the Hymns. give it my unqualified endorsement.

From SAMUEL P. WARREN, Organist, New York.

It is one of the best compilations of tunes I have ever seen, and witnesses to the sound judgment and good taste of the musical editors.

From ALFRED ARTHUR.

I have looked over your very excellent book, "Hymns of the Faith," and think it the very hymn and tune book that has come to my notice.

I

best

THE

American Book of Church Services,

With Selections for Responsive Reading, and full Orders of Service for the

Celebration of Matrimony, and for Funerals and other Occasional Minis-
trations; also, an ample list of Selections of Sacred Music, with Refer-

ences for the guidance of Pastors and Choristers.
EDWARD HUNGERFORD. 1 vol. 16mo, $1.25.

Arranged by Rev.

The following considerations commend this book to the general use of Pastors and Churches: 1. It is not an imitation of the Episcopal Prayer Book or of any other established liturgy. However valuable these may be, there is an undoubted aversion among the non-liturgical churches to imitations of them.

2. The American Book of Church Services adheres to the order handed down from the Pilgrim churches and gradually enriched by the introduction of features which are fast becoming general. It embodies an effort to harmonize and unify on an evangelical basis the elements of worship in current use, with a view to securing more uniformity in the practice of congregations.

3. The peculiar preferences of local churches have been consulted by offering a choice between simple and more complex orders of service.

4. The hearty and general participation of the congregation in worship will be promoted by having in hand this book, which contains all the parts to be used in worship excepting hymns, scripture lessons, and those prayers which are extemporaneous.

5. The book furnishes to Pastors a complete manual for Public Worship and for Occasional Ministrations, such as Funerals, Weddings, etc.

6. A Service for Sunday-Schools is provided, with a special litany in which children can join; and in all services, whether of the congregation or family, careful reference is had to the wants of children by furnishing litanies which may be used by those who feel the value of this form of prayer, but each service is complete without the litany.

7. The Responsive Readings have been carefully chosen and are unusually full and well arranged.

8. The Musical Selections furnish a complete directory of musical texts with references to sources whence suitable music for each text may be drawn. Pastors who have been troubled with the inappropriateness of the music used in their churches will find themselves relieved of anxiety on this point so long as the choir limits itself to the abundant material here furnished. The book should be in the hands of every chorister who desires to enter with sympathy into public worship.

9. It is believed that the progress already made towards an enriched Public Worship requires the introduction to the congregation of a book which combines Responsive Readings with a presentation of other material needed for hearty participation in worship, and we commend this work to the careful consideration of pastors and churches, as thoroughly practical and the result of long and successful experience in the conduct of divine service. The position of the author among those who have given attention to the subject here treated has come to be well recognized, and he has put into this book his maturest results. Pains have been taken to secure accuracy and completeness.

Correspondence is solicited by the publishers.
