IX. From The Nova Scotia Institute of Science, through
A. H. MACKAY, LL.D.

The Nova Scotia Institute. of Science has to report the satisfactory completion of its thirty-eighth annual course during which sixteen. papers to be published in its Transactions were presented. The financial condition, thanks to the intelligent interest of the Provincial Government, is good, although a large expenditure was made for binding in addition to that for publication.

The Provincial Government has also taken steps to provide suitable library accommodation for the books and exchanges of the Institute on condition that they shall be free of access to the public; so that next year the library which has for a few years been accommodated in one of the rooms of the University of Dalhousie, may be reported to have been transferred to a room in the new Provincial Government Building annex, with a more luxurious equipment.

Part I of Volume X (being Volume III of the Second Series), containing the Proceedings and Transactions of the session of 1898-99, has been published and distributed to learned societies all over the world. Proc., 1900. F.

X.-From The Niagara Historical Society, through MISS CARNOCHAN.

In presenting to your honourable Society a brief account of the work accomplished by us during the fourth year of our existence as a society, we feel it an honour to lay before a society so broad in its aims and far reaching in its influence, the report of our young society.

During the year eight meetings were held, devoted chiefly to business, both pleasant and profitable. At one of these a paper was read written by Rev. Canon Bull, the respected President of the Lundy's Lane Historical Society, on the Pioneer Missionaries in the Niagara Peninsula.

Our historical room has been open once a week, sometimes oftener; over three hundred visitors having recorded their names, and two hundred articles have been contributed during the year. Many letters have been received asking for information and frequently we have been able to answer inquiries from the documents in our possession. An historical item appears frequently in our local paper, articles contributed being acknowledged.

Three delegates attended the annual meeting of the Ontario Historical Society, and we contributed over one hundred articles to the Historical Loan Exhibit held in Toronto in June, filling two cases and the wall space above.

Letters were sent to the Government asking for the preservation of different historic spots. On our anniversary, 17th September, we visited the different graveyards in the town, strewing flowers on the graves of many; this year we visited in addition, the deserted Butler's graveyard and we hope that this may become a yearly custom.

During the year we have printed two pamphlets containing the following papers :

No. 5.-Sermon preached by Rev. Robt. Addison about 1816; "Historic Homes of Niagara," by Alex. Servos, Jessie McKenzie, Charles Taggart; "Evolution of an Historical Room," by Janet Carnochan.

No. 6.-"Niagara Library, 1800 to 1820," "Early Schools of Niagara," Janet Carnochan.

We exchange publications with twelve societies in Canada and the United States, and during the year have distributed 317 copies to members, the press, historical societies and others interested. Our membership is not large and many of these do not live in the town.

Our great want is a safe fire proof building, with a ground floor room for our collection of over twelve hundred articles and we have not yet given up hope that our petition to the Government may be granted to erect here some memorial to the landing of the United Empire Loyalists, which may take the form of a building for our historical collection which is now not merely of local value but is becoming provincial.

Officers.

Patron-Wm. Kirby, F.R.S.C.

President-Miss Carnochan.

Vice-President-Henry Paffard.

Secretary-Alfred Ball.

Treasurer-Mrs. A. Servos.

Curator-R. Wilkinson.

Committee Rev. J. C. Garrett, W. W. Ireland, B.A., Rev. N. Smith, Chas. Hunter, Mrs. T. F. Best.

Hon. Vice-Presidents Mrs. Roe, Chas. F. Ball.
