Jesus was baptized by John in Jordan. Can you repeat some passages in which he commanded his disciples to baptize?

Would you prefer to be under the law, or under the Gospel?

Will you give the reasons?

Does your heart cling to the Savior as your dearest friend?

LESSON IV..

Jesus at the Wedding in Cana, and in Jerusalem at the Passover.

CH. ii. 1-25.

1 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there :

2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.

3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.

4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.

5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. 6 And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.

7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the water-pots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.

8 And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.

9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was, (but the servants which drew the water knew,) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,

10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.

11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus

in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

12 After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days.

13 And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, 14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:

15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;

16 And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.

17 And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.

18 Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign she west thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things? 19 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?

21 But he spake of the temple of his body.

22 When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.

23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast-day, many

believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.

24 But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, 25 And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.

Do you recollect the question with which the last lesson closed?

My dear children, have you often asked yourselves, during the week, what you could do to please and honor him who died for you? In the last lesson, who had been conversing with Jesus?

1 WHAT was there at Cana, three days after this? Where was Cana?

Who was there?

2 WHAT other persons were invited to this marriage?

Had he many disciples at this time? - Chap.

1:40.

3 WHEN they wanted wine, who told Jesus they had none?

Was wine a common drink in that country?
Was it like the wine which we have ?

4 WHAT did he say to her?

Does it seem to you that this was respectful, and kind language?-Ch. 19: 26. and 20: 15. Do you not perceive, from these passages, that the language could not indicate unkind feelings?

Would it be proper for you to address your mother in such a manner now, when custom has given a different meaning to the expression ?

Did he not know better than his mother, just at what moment to perform his first miracle? 5 THEN what did his mother say to the servants? Should you not think this proved that she did not consider the language of Jesus unkind?

6 WHAT is it said were set there?

Were Jews accustomed to wash their hands and feet frequently?- Mark 7: 3, 4.

Now do you know what is meant by after the manner of the purifying of the Jews?

If one of these vessels contained four gallons, can you tell how many gallons all of them would contain?

7 THEN What did Jesus tell the servants to do? 8 AFTER they had filled them, what did he say to them ?

9 WHEN they presented this wine to the master of the feast, what did he do?

10 WHAT did he say to the, bridegroom?
Who is meant by the bridegroom?

Did he know how this wine was made?
From what did the Jews make wine?

11 WHAT is it said Jesus manifested by this his first miracle?

What do you understand by a miracle?

Could any man do such a thing as this of himself?

What effect had this miracle on his disciples? 12 WHERE did he go after this?

Where is Capernaum?

Who went with him?

Did they remain there long?

13 WHAT feast of the Jews was near?

When was this feast instituted? Ex. 12: 12, 13.
Now can you tell why this is called Passover?
Where did Jesus go
Ş

How many days did this feast continue ? 14 WHOм did he find in the temple?

For what purpose did they sell these things and exchange money?— (See Ripley's Notes, on Matt. 21: 12, 13.)

15 WHAT did Jesus do?

When he had driven the sheep and oxen out,

and those that sold them, what did he do with the money?

Jesus was the Son of God; was it not right,

then, that he should thus rebuke these wicked men ?

Do you think the trade they carried on there was proper?

16 WHAT did he tell the people to do?

What did he tell them not to do?

17 WHAT did this bring to the mind of his disciples?

In what place is this written? - Ps. 69: 9. How do you feel, when you hear any one speak against your father, or mother, or some dear friend?

18 WHAT did the Jews say to him after he had done these things?

If any person should tell you he was the Son of God, would you believe it, without some proof of it?

19 WHAT did Jesus then tell them ?

What did he mean by the phrase this temple?

v. 21.

Can you repeat any passage to show that the word temple is ever used in this sense? - 1 Cor. 3: 16, 17.

Can any man make his own dead body live again, do you think?

Well, they did destroy or kill his body; did he do as he said he would, and make it alive again? Matt. 28: 5, 6.

Will your body ever be made alive again, when it is dead?- John 5:28.

20 WHAT did the Jews then say?

Do you think they desired to understand the
Savior?

22 DID the disciples recollect this conversation, after Jesus rose from the dead?

How did it affect them?

Ought we not to try and remember as much of the teachings of Jesus as we can ?

23 WHERE was Jesus during the feast of the passover?

What did many do when they saw his miracles?
What does believing in his name mean?- Chap.

1:12.

Do you believe in his name so as to be saved? 24, 5 WHY did Jesus not trust himself in their power?

Do you think he knew how they felt, and what they designed to do, if they could take him? 25 DOES he know what are the feelings of all men ? - 1 Kings 8:39.

Can judges know whether men are guilty of the
crimes of which they are accused, without
any testimony?

If the Savior knows all these things about us
and all men, will it not be a very fearful thing
to appear before him in judgment?
Are you prepared for that solemn day?

LESSON V.

A Conversation of Jesus with Nicodemus about a New Heart.

CH. iii. 1-16.

1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:

2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God; for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.

3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except

a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?

5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
