Easter-Day.
At Morning Prayer, instead of the Psalm (0 come la

let us keep the feast; not with the old leaven, bor with the leaven of malice and wickednefs; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. 1 Cor. v.7. CHR

HRIST being raised from the dead, dieth no more; that he died, he died unto fin once: but in that he livech, he liveth unto God. Likewife reckon ye also yourfelves to be dead indeed unto fin), but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Rom. vi.

9. VHRIST is risen from the dead, and become the first

fruits of them that flept. For fince by man came death; by man came also the refurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die: even fo in Christ thall all be made alive. 1 Cor. xv. 20.

Glory be to the Father, &c. As it was in the beginning, &c. Erfier-day] This is the highest of all feasts, fays Epiphanius; and was obferved as such from the earliest ages of Christianity; commanded to be to, according to St. Augustine, either by the apoitles, or the first general councils. The English name of it is derived from the Saxon ofter, 2 word lignifying “to rile." In the primitive ages the Christians were accustomed on this festival to use the following falutation to each other op meeting in the morning, “ Christ is rifen.” The reply to this was eithet, “Christ is risen, indeed;" or chus, “And hath appeared unto Simon.” It is taid this practice is still retained in the Greek church. In reference probably to this cuftom, our church changes her usual invitatory plan, «O come, let us sing,” &c. and appoints a feries of sentences from scripture in lieu thereof, which are all allusive to the glorious event of Chrift's refurrection from the grave. The firit of thefe fentences was added at the review 1662; the fecond, (which was the first in Edward the Vleb's prayer-book) was concluded with two hallelujahs; and the next with one After which was inserted as follows:

The Priest. Shew forth to all nations the glory of God:
Tbe answer. And among all people his wonderous works.

O God, who for our redemption didit give thine only-begotten Son to the death of the crofs; and by his glorious resurrection haft delivered us from the power of our enemy; grant us fo to die daily from fin, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection, through whe fume Chrift our Lord. Amen.

Lmighty God, who through thine only-begotten Son

Jesus Christ hast overcome death, and opened unto us the gate of everlasting life; We humbly befeech thee, that as by thy special grace preventing us, thou dost put into our minds good desires; so by thy continual help we may bring the same to good effect, through Jesus Christ our Lord; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

The Epistle. Coloff. iii. 1. then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ fitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth: For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness which is idolatry: For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: In the which ye also walked some time, when

The Collec?] This prayer for grace to will, and power to do good, is composed from a form in the Sacramentarium of Gregory; and another in the Gallic. Lit. Mabil. P: 336. The introitus at the first communion, in Edward's book, at which this collect was used, was psalm xvi. At the second communion, (at which the colle&t for the first Sunday after Easter was used) the introitus was the ijid pfalm: and the epistle and gospel, 1 Cor. v. 6, to verse 9; and Mark xvi. to verse 9.

But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us, for it is towards evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. And it came to pass, as he fat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.

And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their fight. And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? And they rose up the fame hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, saying, The Lord is riseu indeed, and hath appeared to Simon. And they told what things were done in the way, and liow he was known of them in breaking of bread.

The Collect] Before the last review the collect for this day was what we now use on the succeeding Sunday; being the fame that in the first common prayer-book of Edward Vith' was ordained for the post-communion on Eafter-day. The introitus was psalm cxiii.
