himfelf went not up to joy, but firft he fuffered pain; he entered not into his glory before he was crucified. So truly our way to eternal joy is to fuffer here with Christ; and our door to enter into eternal life is gladly to die with Chrift; that we may rife again from death, and dwell with him in everlafting life. Now therefore, taking your ficknefs, which is thus profitable for you, patiently; I exhort you, in the name of God, to remember the profeffion which you made unto God in your Baptifm. And forafmuch as after this life there is an account to be given unto the righteous Judge, by whom all must be judged, without refpect of perfons; I require you to examine yourself and your eftate, both toward God and man; fo that, accufing and condemning yourfelf for your own faults, you may find mercy at our heavenly Father's hand for Chrift's fake, and not be accufed and condemned in that fearful judgment. Therefore I shall rehearse to you the Articles of our Faith, that you may know whether you do believe as a Chriftian man fhould, or no.

¶ Here the Minifter shall rehearse the Articles of the Faith, faying thus,

OST thou believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth?

And in Jefus Chrift his only-begotten Son our Lord? And that he was conceived by the Holy Ghoft, born of the Virgin Mary; that he fuffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; that he went down into hell, and alfo did rife again the third day; that he afcended into Heaven, and fitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; and from thence fhall come again at the end of the world, to judge the quick and the dead?

And doft thou believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy Catholick Church; the Commnnion of Saints; the Remiffion of Sins; the Refurrection of the Flesh; and everlasting Life after death?

The fick Perfon shall answer,

All this I ftedfaftly believe.

¶ Then fhall the Minifter examine whether he repent him truly of his fins, and be in charity with all the world; exhorting him to forgive, from the bottom of his heart, all perfons that have offended him; and if he hath offended any other, to afk them forgiveness and where he hath done injury or wrong to any man, that he make amends to the uttermoft of his power. And if he hath not before dispofed of his goods, let him then be admonished to make his Will, and to declare his Debts, what he oweth, and what is owing unto him; for the better difcharging of his confcience, and the quietness of his Executors. Should often be put in remembrance to take order for the fettling of their temporal eftates whilft they are in health.

Thefe words before rehearfed may be faid before the Minifter begin his Prayer, as he fhall fee caufe.

¶ The Minifter should not omit earnestly to move fuch fick perfons as are of ability, to be liberal to the poor.

Here fhall the fick perfon be moved to make a fpecial Confeffion of his Sins, if he feel his conference troubled with any weighty matter. After which Confeffion, the Priest fhall abfolve him (if he humbly and heartily defire it) after this fort.

UR Lord Jefus Chrift, who hath left power to his

and believe in him, of his great mercy forgive thee thine offences: And by his authority committed to me, I abfolve thee from all thy fins, In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

And then the Prieft fhall fay the Collect following.

Let us pray.

thofe who truly repent, that thou remembereft them no more; Open thine eye of mercy upon this thy fervant, who most earnestly defireth pardon and forgiveness. Renew in him, moft loving Father, whatfoever hath been decayed by the fraud and malice of the devil, or by his own carnal will and frailnefs; preferve and continue this fick member in the unity of the Church; confider his contrition, accept his tears, affuage bis pain, as shall feem to thee most expedient for him. And forafmuch as he putteth his full truft only in thy mercy, impute not unto him his former fins, but ftrengthen him with thy bleffed Spirit; and when thou art pleased to take him hence, take him unto thy favour, through the merits of thy most dearly beloved Son Jefus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then fhall the Minifter fay this Pfalm.

Pfalm lxxi. In te, Domine, speravi.

IN thee, O Lord, have I put my truft; let me never be put to confufion: but rid me, and deliver me in thy righteousness; incline thine ear unto me, and fave me.

Be thou my ftrong hold, whereunto I may alway refort thou haft promised to help me, for thou art my houfe of defence, and my caftle.

Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the ungodly: out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.

For thou, O Lord God, art the thing that I long for thou art my hope, even from my youth.

Through thee have I been holden up ever fince I was born: thou art he that took me out of my mother's womb; my praise fhall alway be of thee.

I am become as it were a monfter unto many: but my fure truft is in thee.

O let my mouth be filled with thy praife: that I may fing of thy glory and honour all the day long.

Caft me not away in the time of age: forfake me not when my ftrength faileth me.

For mine enemies speak against me; and they that lay wait for my foul, take their counsel together, faying:

God hath forfaken him; perfecute him, and take him,

for there is none to deliver him.

Go not far from me, O God: my God, hafte thee to help me.

Let them be confounded and perish that are against my foul let them be covered with fhame and difhonour that feek to do me evil.

As for me, I will patiently abide alway: and will praise thee more and more.

My mouth fhall daily fpeak of thy righteousness and falvation: for I know no end thereof.

I will go forth in the ftrength of the Lord God: and will make mention of thy righteoufnefs only.

Thou, O God, haft taught me from my youth up until now: therefore will I tell of thy wondrous works. Forfake me not, O God, in mine old age, when I am grey-headed until I have fhewed thy ftrength unto this generation, and thy power to all them that are yet for to

come.

Thy righteoufnefs, O God, is very high; and great things are they that thou haft done: O God, who is like unto thee!

Glory be to the Father, &c.
As it was in the beginning, &c.

TAdding this.

pre

Saviour of the world, who by thy Crofs and cious Blood haft redeemed us; fave us, and help

us, we humbly befeech thee, O Lord.

¶ Then fhall the Minifter fay,

HE Almighty Lord, who is a moft ftrong tower to all them that put their truft in him; to whom all things in Heaven, in Earth, and under the Earth do bow and obey, be now and evermore thy defence; and make thee know and feel, that there is none other Name under Heaven given to man, in whom, and through whom, thou mayeft receive health and falvation, but only the Name of our Lord Jefus Chrift. Amen.

UNTO

¶ And after that shall say,

NTO God's gracious mercy and protection we commit thee. The Lord bless thee, and keep thee. The Lord make his face to fhine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee. The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace, both now and evermore. Amen.

TA Prayer for a fick Child.

Almighty God, and merciful Father, to whom alone belong the iffues of life and death; Look down from Heaven, we humbly befeech thee, with the eyes of mercy upon this child now lying upon the bed of fickness: Vifit him, O Lord, with thy falvation; deliver him in thy good appointed time from his bodily pain, and fave his foul for thy mercies fake: That, if it fhall be thy pleafure to prolong his days here on earth, he may live to thee, and be an inftrument of thy glory, by ferving thee faithfully, and doing good in his genera tion; or elfe receive him into thofe heavenly habitations,

Only the name] After this prayer in Edw.VIth's firft book followed this rubric and prayer of anointing. "If the fick perfon defired to be anointed, the priest was to anoint him upon the forehead or breaft only, making the fign of the crofs, faying thus: As with this vifible oil thy body outwardly is anointed, fo our heavenly Father, Almighty God, grant of his infinite goodnefs, that thy foul inwardly may be anointed with the Holy Ghoft, who is the Spirit of all ftrength, comfort, relief, and gladneis. And vouchfafe for his great mercy (if it be his bleffed will) to reftore unto thee thy bodily health and ftrength to ferve him; and fend thee releafe of all thy pains, troubles, and difeafes, both in body and mind. And howfo ever his goodness (by his divine and unfearchable providence) shall difpofe of thee, we his unworthy minifters and fervants humbly befeech the eter nal Majefty to do with thee according to the multitude of his innumerable mercies, and to pardon thee all thy fins and offences committed by all thy bodily fenfes, paflions, and carnal affections; who alfo vouchfafe mercifully to grant unto thee ghoftly ftrength, by his holy Spirit, to withstand and overcome all temptations and affaults of thine adverfary, that in no wife he prevail against thee, but that thou mayeft have perfect victory and triumph againit the devil, fin, and death, through Chrift our Lord; who by his death hath overcome the prince of death, and with the Father, and the Holy Ghoft, evermore liveth and reigneth God, world without end. Amen."- -After this followed the thirteenth pfalm, "How long wilt thou forget me, O Lord? &c."

All this was omitted at the review, 1551; and the fervice terminated here, till the review 1662, when the form beginning "Unto God's gracious mercy," &c. and the four fucceeding prayers, were introduced.
