Dounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth, commending ourselves 10 every man's conscience in the fight of God. But if our Gospel be hid, it is bid to them that are loft: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, left the light of the glorious Gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, thould shine unto them. For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' fake. For God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

The Epistle. Rev. xii. 7. "HERE was war in heaven: Michael and his angels

fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and bis angels, and prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. The Collect] This prayer for the protection of angels was adopted 1549, from the Sac. of Greg. The introitus was pfalm cxiii.

depth of the sea. Woe unto the world because of of. fences! for it must need be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh! Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cur them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire. And if thine eye of. fend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell-fire. Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones: for I say unto you, that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.

St. Luke the Evangelift.

LMIGHTY God, who callest Luke the Physician,

St. Luke] This Evangelift wrote his gospel about seven years after his conjunction with St. Paul, whom he never left till his death. He is recorded to have written this excellent work in Achaia and Bæotia, whilst St. Paul ftaid there, which was in the year of Christ 58. Hier. Præf. Met. He is faid to have written his Gospel to hinder the faithful from being poisoned by the heretical relations of the Corinthians, a very early race of heretics sprung up in the church —Epith. Hær. li. He wrote his book of The Acts of the Apostles about three years after, in the fifth year of Nero, and of Christ 61. There has been a general tradition concerning this saint, that he was not only a physician,

but an eminent painter in his time; that he painted the Virgin Mary, (Niceph. lib. xiv. cap. 2) St. Peter and Paul, ibid. lib. ii. cap. 23; and (if we credit Metaphraftes) our Saviour himself.—Metap. in xviii. O&ob. How St. Luke disposed of himself after St. Paul's martyrdom at Rome, is not so very certain : Epiphanius says he preached in Dalmatia, in Gaul, Italy, and Macedonia.-Epiph. Hær. li. Others affirm, that when he left Rome, he returned into the East, and that from thence he went to preach in Africa, and that he converted the Thebans to the faith.-@cum. in Lucam. That he at last suffered martyrdom, the best authors of antiquity allow.–Nazianz. i. Orat. in Jul. Gaudent. Tract. de. ded. Bafil. The later Greek writers relate his death with more particularities, saying, that he was crucified or nailed to the branches of an olive tree, there not being upon the place dry wood sufficient to make a cross for him to suffer on.- Niceph. lib. ii. cap. 42.

St. Simon and St. Jude Apostles.

the foundation of thy Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the head corner-stone; Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their doctrine,

St. Simon and St. Judet. There are two faints commemorated by the church this day. The firit is Simon, surnamed “ The Canaanite,” Mat. X. 4; and Zelotes, Luke vi. 15; Acts i. 13; which two names are the fame, for the Hebrew word canaan signifies a zelot. There was a feat of men called zelots, about the time of Christ, in Judea, who, out of pretended zeal for God's honour, would commit the most grievous outrages; they would choose and ordain high-priests out of the bafest of the people, and murder men of the principal dignity.-Jofeph. Bell. Jud. lib. iv. cap. II, 12. It is probable that Simon, before his conversion and call, might be one of this sect; or, however, some fire and fierceness in his temper gave occasion for his being called the Zelot. He was one of the twelve Apostles, and kin to our blessed Lord; either his half-brother, being one of Joseph's fons by another wife, as all the Greek fathers contend, or coulin by his mother's side. Most certain this is that Simon which is meant, Matt. xiii

. 55, “ Are not his brethren, James, and Jotes, and Simon, and Judas?" There is a tradition, that it was at his marriage in Cana of Galilee that our Saviour was present.-Niceph. lib. viii. cap. 3c, After our Saviour's afcenfion, he is recorded to have preached the gospel in Mesopotamia, ( Ep. ad Gal. cap. iv. and cont. Helo.) that he preached likewise in Ægypt and Africa is related by others, Itd. de vit. and obit. Sanct. And (if we may credit Nicephorus, a later writer) that he extended his million as far as Britain.-Niceph. lib. ii. 40. He fuffered martyrdom in Perlia.

Jude the other apostle, whose memory is this day observed, was one of the twelve apostles, brother to James, (Jude i.) and therefore bore the same relation with him to our Saviour. He was the same Judas mentioned in the verse before cited, “ Are not his brethren, James, and Jofes, and Simon, and Judas?" He had two surnames, one was Thaddæus, which which does not seem to be more than a diminutive or small alteration of Judas, and is derived from the same root in Hebrew as Judas is. Labbæus is derived from a word in the Hebrew which signifies heart, and is as much as corculum, or little heart. He preached the gospel with his brother in Mesopotamia, Arabia, and Idumea, &c.—Niceph. Hift. lib. ii. cap. 4. He fuffered martyrdom at Berytus.
