moreover, the dogs came and licked his fores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; and in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and faid, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy life-time receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulph fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, left they also come into this place of torment. Abraham faith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

Lord, who never failest to help and govern them

whom thou dost bring up in thy stedfast fear and love; Keep us, we beseech thee, under the protection of thy good providence; and make us to have a perpetual fear and love of thy holy name, through Jesus Christ our. Lord. Amen.

The Colleft] This prayer for protection by God's providence was composed anew at the Reformation, and altered a little at the Review 1662. It ftood before that time, “Lord, make us to have a perpetual fear and love of thy holy name; for thou never faileft &c." The introitus was Pfalm ii.

ARVEL not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother, abidech in death. Whosoever hateth his brother, is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren, But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from bim; how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him, For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. And whatfoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his fight. And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the Name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. And he that keepeth his commandments, dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

with humility: for God relifteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves there. fore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: casting all your care upon him, for he careth for you. Be fober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion,

walkerh about, seek ing whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us into his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you per, feet, ftablish, strengthen, settle you. And when he haih found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. I say unto you, That likewise joy shall be in heaven over one finner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons which need no repentance. Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, dqth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it? And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me, for I have found the piece which I had Joft. Likewise, I say unto you. There is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one finner that repenteth.

For the earnest expectation, &c. For the anxious expectation of the whole world intently looks after fuch a manifestation of a future state of glory, as is worthy of the fons of God. The world, I say, looks for happiness; .or mankind was involuntarily subjected to evil

, and the wiferpart of them are sensible of their present imperfect state. But this was the just will of God, on account of man's first transgression.

ture waiteth for the manifeftation of the fons of God. For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope: because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption, into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the first. fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within our, felves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

For with the fame measure that ye mete withal, it shall be measured to you again. And he spake a paráble unto them; Can the blind lead the blind ? shall they not both fall into the ditch ?. The disciple is not above his master : but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Either. how capft thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself be. holdelt not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast our first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou fee clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye.

Bondage of corruption] Death, or corruption in the grave; to which the redemption of the body is opposed, verse 23, This expectation of the world is a manifest truth, for we know &c. The words in Psalm lxxxix. 47, 48, express the general complaint of mankind in all ages.

Not only they! And not only the heathen world, but those amongst the Jews who were the earliest and most distinguished converts to Christianity.:
