moreover, the dogs came and licked his fores. And it came to pafs, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bofom: the rich man alfo died, and was buried; and in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and feeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bofom. And he cried and faid, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and fend Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham faid, Son, remember that thou in thy life-time receivedft thy good things, and likewife Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And befide all this, between us and you there is a great gulph fixed: fo that they which would pafs from hence to you cannot; neither can they pafs to us, that would come from thence. Then he faid, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest fend him to my father's houfe: For I have five brethren; that he may teftify unto them, left they alfo come into this place of torment. Abraham faith unto him, They have Mofes and the prophets; let them hear them. And he faid, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he faid unto him, If they hear not Mofes and the prophets, neither will they be perfuaded, though one rofe from the dead.

The Collect.

Lord, who never faileft to help and govern them whom thou doft bring up in thy stedfast fear and love; Keep us, we beseech thee, under the protection of thy good providence; and make us to have a perpetual fear and love of thy holy name, through Jefus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect This prayer for protection by God's providence was compofed anew at the Reformation, and altered a little at the Review 1662. It stood before that time, "Lord, make us to have a perpetual fear and love of thy holy name; for thou never faileft &c." The introitus was Pfalm ii.

ARVEL not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

We know that we have paffed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother, abideth in death. Whofoever hateth his brother, is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren, But whofo hath this world's good, and feeth his brother have need, and fhutteth up his bowels of compaffion from him; how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and fhall affure our hearts before him. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us hot, then have we confidence toward God. And whatfoever we afk, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do thofe things that are pleafing in his fight. And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the Name of his Son Jefus Chrift, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. And he that keepeth his commandments, dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

The Gospel. St. Luke xiv. 16.

Certain man made a great fupper, and bade many: and fent his fervant at fupper-time to fay to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready. And they all with one confent began to make excuse. The first faid unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and fee it: I pray thee have me excused. And another faid, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused. And another faid, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. So that fervant came, and thewed his lord these things. Then the mafter of the House being angry, faid to his fervant, Go out quickly

into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. And the fervant faid, Lord, it is done as thou hast com. manded, and yet there is room. And the lord faid unto the fervant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my houfe may be filled, For I fay unto you, that none of thofe men which were bidden fhall taste of my fupper.

1 Peter v. 5.

ALL of you be fubject one to another, and be clothed

with humility: for God refifteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: cafting all your care upon him, for he careth for you. Be fober, be vigilant; because your adverfary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, feek ing whom he may devour: Whom refift stedfaft in the faith, knowing that the fame afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us into his eternal glory by Christ Jefus, after that ye have fuffered a while, make you per fect, ftablifh, ftrengthen, fettle you. To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

in the name of the only-begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, becaufe their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, left his deeds fhould be reproved. But be that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifeft, that they are wrought in God.

The Gospel. St. John x. 1.

́ERILY, verily, I fay unto you, He that entreth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up fome other way, the fame is a thief and a robber. But he that entereth in by the door is the fhepherd of the sheep. To him the porter openeth; and the fheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own fheep by name, and leadeth them And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth

before them, and the theep follow him: for they know his voice. And a stranger will they not follow: but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers. This parable spake Jefus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he fpake unto them. Then faid Jefus unto them again, Verily, verily, I fay unto you, I am the door of the theep. All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the fheep did not hear them. I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he thall be faved, and fhall go in and out, and find pasture. The thief cometh not, but for to fteal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

Trinity-Sunday] In ancient liturgies and ritualifts we find this day looked upon as an octave of Pentecoft; or as a Dominica vacans, (that is, a Sunday which had no particular office appointed for it, on account of the preceding Saturday being a day of laborious devotion) and that the obferving of it as a feaft of the Trinity was of later ufe, and more late in the Roman church than in fome others.-Decretal. lib. ii.
