another. I am sorry to have to remark that in a great number of congregations, there is a practice very disgusting to pious christians: and which unveils the weakness of human nature. It would appear that they think the sabbath dedicated to two grand purposes. First, that the body should be dressed in the first fashion of the season: and se- . condly, that during the time of divine service, those fashionable persons should be closely examining others, to see if any one exceed them in dress.

It is distinctly observed in Scripture, that "no man can serve two masters." Now my dear friends, can any of these last mentioned taste of the Holy Spirit? Here we discover, why it is that the Unitarians, as well as numerous other sects, are ready to say, "we have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost." That spirit of pride and affectation; that spirit of self righteousness, cloaked in a garb of fashion, must completely be done away. If we live in the spirit, let us also walk in the spirit: let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another; envying one another. "What, know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost, which is in you; which ye have of God: and ye are not your own, for ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. I. Cor. vi. 19, 20. JONAH made no apology when he was commanded a second time by the Almighty, to go and preach to the Ninevites. When the Spirit of God is with the preacher or

writer, no apology is required, but the pure' word of God will flow as the rain from the heavens ; and likewise, except ye repent, and receive the Spirit, ye can in no wise expect forgiveness. Turn ye turn ye, why will ye die?" The temple in which the Holy Spirit dwells, is the Lord's; and why will ye rob him who has "bought you with a price."

Is there ever an unconverted sinner that hears these vehement words of God, is there ever a man or woman that is a stranger to the renewing, sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit? Hearken then, to the voice of your Maker, and turn to him in Christ, without delay. Would you know the will of God? Why this is his will, that you presently turn. Shall the LIVING GOD send so earnest a message to his creatures, and not be obeyed? Hearken then, all ye that live after the flesh; THE LORD that gave you your breath, hath sent a messenger from heaven; and this is his and this is his message, “turn ye, turn ye,

Unitarians can never experience joy in the Holy Ghost, because they have not the true faith in the great doctrine of atonement! They can feel no Comforter; nor can they judge those that are comforted! Their Satanic principles have overwhelmed their faculties!

Had it not been for the IMPOSITION of Lady Sarah Hewley's executors, time would have subdued them before now; but the time is fast approaching when Lady Hewley's bequeathment will be sprink

led with the blood of Christ. Her ladyship was interred in St. Saviour's-gate Church; and on her monument was inscribed the following scripture passage.

"The dead in Christ shall rise first.”

In the introductory words of her last will (to which she added a codicil only two days before her death), she distinctly expresses her faith and hope in the atonement of Christ, to the following effect, viz. "Having first committed my immortal soul into the hands of my dear Redeemer, to be washed in his blood, and made meet to partake of the inheritance of the saints; and leaving my vile body to be disposed of by my executors, with as little cost and ceremony as may be, &c." Lady Hewley supported a full Saviour by her faith; but through the imposition of her ladyship's executors, her money now supports a number of unfaithful believers in Christ. But we hope that the time is near at hand, when these bequeathments will run in silver streams, to wash these unbelievers in the most precious blood of Christ.

O Jesus, source of calm repose,

Thy like, nor man, nor angel knows.

Let us know Jesus carrying on the great work of our salvation in his ascension into heaven, and in his session at God's right haud, as well as in his mission of the Holy Ghost. These are points of great use. If these transactions had not occurred,

where had we been? Here is an object of admiration. Indeed the very angels at the sight of it stood admiring and adoring. It took up their hearts, and astonished their understanding. Come then, O my soul, do thou take a view of that which they admire. The design concerns thee in particular, and therefore closely study this argument, and know it for thyself. Study first the ascension of Christ, how, and whither, and why he ascended. Secondly, study the session of Christ at God's right hand. O the riches of that spiritual, heavenly knowledge!

Study the mission of the Holy Ghost. Not a circumstance in it but deserves thy study. What endeavours have there been to dive into the secrets of nature what volumes have been written on physics, metaphysics, and mathematics; and is not this subject, CHRIST? Are not these subjects, Christ's ascension, Christ's mission of the Holy Spirit, of more value and benefit than all the others? Come, study that piece of the Bible wherein these are written. There is not a line, nor expression of Christ in the Scripture, but contains matter enough for a whole age to comment on. Thou needest not leave old principles for new discoveries, for in those very particulars thou mightest find successive sweetness to all ETERNITY,

NOTE ON THE FIFTH CHAPTER.

If

THE Trinity in the Divine Being, may be most properly and fitly illustrated by the nature of man: for as man is the image of God, we are justified in forming our ideas of the original from the nature of that image. In man there are two distinct faculties, which united together, form, or rather put forth, an operating power. The inmost, and most important of these is THE WILL; and hence love, whether it be the love of good or the love of evil, is the very essence of derived existence. we take away love, or THE WILL, which is the faculty of love, we must at the same time destroy thought, for thought is the offspring of love. The faculty of thought is the understanding, and this faculty depends upon the will, for before the mind can act on any subject, that subject must have entered into the will, and become an object either of love or aversion, either of indifference or desire: but when the mind has fixed its affections upon any object, that object becomes instantly a subject of thought; and then, only, is that love manifested in outward action.

The will alone, and without the understanding, cannot act. Love existing only in the will is powerless. Before it can be brought forth into act, it must enter into the understanding, and there acquire a definite form. Or, to change the language, good in the will, can only act by means of wisdom in the understanding; for before it is thus manifested it is hidden, not being the subject of thought. The understanding is therefore the ma nifestation of the will; and he who can behold the thought of another, beholds his will, which is the spirit of that thought. Once more. No one can approach the will of another, but
