1. The hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship Him. God is a spirit; and they that worship him, must worship Him in spirit and in truth.—John iv. 23, 24. Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father. Let that therefore abide in you which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye shall also continue in the Son, and in the Father. And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.-1 John i. 23, 24, 25.

2. Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation.-Heb. i. 14. 3. The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him; to all that call upon him in truth.-Ps. cxlv. 18. Note D.

OF REDEMPTION.

Quest. 12. What do the Sacred Scriptures teach concerning Redemption?

Ans. They teach, that from pure love(1) to fallen man, Jehovah God himself(2) came down from Heaven, and took upon Him human nature,(3) in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ, for the purpose of removing hell or evil from man, of saving him from eternal misery,(4) of restoring the Heavens to order,(5) and of preparing the way for a new Church upon earth.(6)

1. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his son to be the propitiation for our sins.-1 John iv. 10. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved.-John iii. 16, 17.

2. For unto us a child is born; unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called wonderful, counsellor, the mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.-Is. ix. 6. God was in Christ reconciling the world unto himself.-2 Cor. v. 19.

3. God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.--1 Tim. iii. 16.

4. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.--1 Tim.

i. 15. And hath delivered us from the powers of darkness.-Col. i. 13.

5. For it pleased the Father that in Him should all fullness dwell; and, having made peace through the blood of the cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself, by him I say, whether they be things in earth or things in Heaven.--Ibid i. 19, 20. And the seventy returned again with joy, saying,. Lord, even the Devils are subject unto us through thy name. And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from Heaven.--Luke x. 17, 18.

6. The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord. This day is the scripture fulfilled in your ears.--Luke iv. 18, 19, 21. Now is the Judgment of this world; now shall the Prince of this world be cast out; and I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.--John xii. 31, 32.--See also Is. lxiii. 1 to 6.

Quest. 13. How was this salvation effected?

Ans. It was effected by his combating with and conquering the Hells,(1) and by various temptations admitted into his human principle, the last of which was the passion of the cross, or the crucifixion; (2) by which the Humanity was at length glorified, and united and made one with the Father, or the Divinity, from whence it came;(3) in which Divine Humanity he continues to keep the Hells or evil in subjection, and to redeem mankind to eternity.(4) Note E.

1. But if I cast out Devils by the spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you. Or else, how can one enter a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.--Matth. xii. 28, 29. Now is the judgment of this world; now shall the prince of this world be cast out.--John xii. 31. And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.--Col. ii. 15,

2. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, it is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. --John xix. 30.

3. I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world; again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.--John xvi. 28. Jesus said now is the son of Man glorified, and God is glori

fied in him. If God be glorified in Him, God shall also glorify Him in himself, and shall straightway glorify Him.--John xiii. 31, 32. These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy son, that thy son also may glorify thee. And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self, with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.--] --Ib. xvii. 1, 5.

4. And Jesus came, and spake to them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.--Matth. xxviii. 18. Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory.--Luke xxiv. 26. I am he that liveth, and was dead; and behold, I am alive for evermore; Amen; and have the keys of hell and death.--Rev. i. 18. Also, John i. 12.

OF THE WORD, OR SACRED SCRIPTURES.

Quest. 14. What ought you to believe concerning the Sacred Scriptures, or Word of the Lord?

Ans. I believe that they were dictated or spoken by the Lord himself,(1) and that they are the most holy of all books; being the medium of union between heaven and earth; and containing divine truth, (2) in a three-fold sense, namely, Celestial, Spiritual and Natural; (3) accommodated to the angels(4) of the three heavens,(5) and also to men on earth.(6)

1. And the Lord spake unto Moses, go unto Pharaoh, and say unto him, thus saith the Lord, &c.--Exod. viii. 1--xiv. 1, 2--xx. 1. Moreover, the Lord said unto me, take a great roll and write in it with a man's pen, &c.--Is. viii. 1. Thus saith the Lord, &c.--xlv. 1, 11, 14, 18. The word of the Lord came to me saying, &c.--Jer. ii. 1--xlvii. 1--1. 1.-Ezek. xvii. 1--xviii. 1. The Revelation of Jesus Christ which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John.--Rev. i. 1. eneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you they are spirit, and they are life.-John vi. 63. And beginning at Moses, and all the Prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures, the things concerning himself.— Luke xxiv. 27. Open thou mine eyes that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.-Ps. cxix. 18. For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, &c. which things are an allegory.-Gal. iv. 24.

5. I knew a man, &c. caught up to the third Heaven.-2 Cor. xii. 2.

6. The Law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul, the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes;—the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever;-the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether: More to be desired than gold,-yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honey-comb: Moreover by them is thy servant warned; and in keeping of them there is great reward.-Ps. xix. 7 to 11.-See also 2 Tim. iii. 16, 17.

Quest. 15. Why was such a Revelation of Divine Truth necessary?

Ans. Because the knowledge of Divine Truth is not attainable by the mere light of reason, but only by revelation from the Lord Himself;(1) and the knowledge of the Lord, and the consequent acknowledgment of Him, are the foundation of all our religious and moral duties.(2)

1. Now to Him that is of power to establish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which was kept secret since the world began, but now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith;-to God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ forever. Amen.-Rom. xvi. 25, 26, 27. Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, &c.

Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples; and they are written for our admonition upon whom the ends of the world are come.-1 Cor. x. 1 to 11.

2. Search the scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life; and they are they which testify of me.--John v. 39. And behold a certain Lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying: Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? He said unto him, what is written in the Law? How readest thou? And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself. And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: This do, and thou shalt live.-Luke x. 25 to 28. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for Doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.-2 Tim. iii. 16, 17.-See also Heb. xi, 6.

1. And he said unto them these are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the law of Moses, and in the Prophets, and in the Psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures.-Luke xxiv. 44, 45. The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life.-John vi. 63.
