Mr. Jamiefen's Popular Ballads, and Mr. Cottle's Selection of Poems §, reft chiefly on the works of other poets: yet has each collector occafionally introduced his own effufions; and fometimes with a very happy effect. The Canzoni of Mr. Mathias ||, though not English compofitions, are ftrong proofs of English genius; and place his name, where he can have but few competitors, in the clafs of AngloTufcan Poets. They remind us of the portrait of Reynolds, received into the gallery at Florence.

MISCELLANIES.

Variety at least must recommend this concluding fection of our preface, which is a clafs and no clafs, or the compulfory union of fubjects which have no natural tendency to unite. Bibliography, Mufic, Education, in a word, whatever does not belong to any of the former fections, and has not companions fufficient to conftitute a new one.

Let us begin with Mr. Beloe's Anecdotes of Literature; a book of fuch various information on fubjects fo congenial to the purfuits of fcholars, that it cannot ever be overlooked, till fuch inquiries fhall fall into neglect. Of the Bibliographical Dictionary, of which Mr. Adam Clarke is the editor **, we have hitherto faid little; but, efteeming it for the reasons above affigned, we fhall foon take an opportunity to

continue our friendly notes upon it. The Mufical Grammar, lately publifhed by Dr. Callcott, is a fpecimen of elementary inftruction, not before attempted in our language. On the fubject of Education in general, Mifs Hamilton, who had before publifhed with fuccefs, has lately added two volumes of Letters t, in which her former reputation is not impaired. On the neceffary cultivation for the Arts in England, Mr. P. Hoare has written with fagacity and tafte. Subfervient, in great measure, to the fame design is the periodical paper called the Director, into which, however, a great variety of information and amufement has been introduced. To Antiquaries, who delight in a difficult inveftigation, we can recommend, as curious at leaft, Mr. Gabb's difquifitions on the great Pyramid. They who do not adopt his theory will yet be pleafed with his ingenuity and knowledge. The Opufcula Ruhnkeniana, edited by Mr. Kidd, befides opening the accels to many valuable tracts, contain fo much of very laborious and ufeful collection in the prolegomena, as muft make the work almost invaluable to a critical Scholar.

As works of plain and fober utility, let us conclude by recommending the Effey on the Population of Dublin, by Mr. IVbitelaw **; and the elaborate Nautical Tables, compiled and published by Mr. Mendoza Rios tt, under the patronage of the Board of Longitude, and other protectors of true fcience.

Here then let us paufe; and would to heaven we could fay with a modern, but fometimes not ineloquent, poet;
