Lately, in South Anne-ftreet, Dublin, of the complicated miteries of difeafe and poverty, Henry Lucas, M. A. fon of Dr. Charles Lucas, formerly repre. fentative of that city in parliament. The fate of this unhappy man is a melancholy warning to thole who put their trust in popular affection. Had Dr. Lucas, who was a man of fterling ability, a plied himfelf to the purfuit of his profellion, he might have railed an ample fortune to his family; but he became the leader of a party, and left that family to perish: It is too true that the unhappy gentleman, whofe death we now record, has for many years been fuftained chiefly by thofe who had been hoftile to his father's politics, and that half the fum, which is at this moment wantonly wafting in decorations of the ftatue of Dr. Lucas, in the Royal Exchange, would have faved his fon from perishing for want.

At his houfe in Great Marlboroughftreet, Dr. Garnett. The fcientific world has fuftained great lofs by the death of this gentleman, who was endowed by nature with great talents,

which he had cultivated with unremit ting affiduity. He was well acquainted with moft branches of natural history, but he had particularly turned his atten tion towards chemistry, and was profoundly skilled in all its modern improvements.

Thomas Harrington, Efq. of Waltham Hall, Effex. Walking in the Green Park, he fuddenly dropt down in a fit of apoplexy, and in a few minutes after expired in the aims of a gentieman whole humanity led him to his affittance. Mr. Harrington wasthe author of feveral medical tracts.

At Brompton, near London, by a rapid decline, aged 27, Mis Sophia Colfton, daughter of the late rev. Mr. Colftan, of Firkin's-hall, in Oxfordshire, a lady truly beloved and regretted. She has left the bulk of her fortune to her fteady friend Mits Rofs. This lovely and amiable pair had for years fome tecluded themselves from the deleterious diffipation of public life, and the empty phantom of adulation, for a beautiful retreat in Wales, becoming the elegant culrivators of fimple nature, and the fict votaries of her attendant handmaids.Truth and virtue

On Tuesday, July 22, at Sampfon. Hall, Kerfey, in Suffolk, Mrs. Katherine Thorowgood, a maiden lady, only child and heirefs of the late Sir Thomas Thorowgood, Knight, and the laft of that name and family. We hear that fhe has left the Rev. Mr. Tennant, of Higham an eftate of upwards of 600l. per annum; the wrote her own will, and had no particular acquaintance with Mr. Tenant, but bequeathed him the legacy, as it is fuppofed, in confequence, of his family and fituation in life.

Saturday the 17th, the last day of Act Term, Meffrs. William Henry Mofeley, of St. Mary Hall, and Peter Rainier, of Oriel college; Mafters of Arts, were admitted Bachelors and to practife in Medicine. The Rev. Samuel James Goodenough, and the Hon. and Rev. Pierce Meade, Bachelors of Arts, of Wadham college, were admitted Mafters of Arts. Mr. Frederick Hamilton Carrington, of the fame college, was admitted Bachelor of Arts. The number of Regent Maf. ters this year was one hundred and ten.

On Friday morning laft, in full convocation, the honorary degree of Doctor in Civil Law was conferred on the Right Honourable Viscount Nelson of the Nile, Duke of Bronti, and on the Right Honourable Sir William Hamilton, Knight of the Bath, to which they were feverally prefented by Dr. Blackstone, Vinerian Profeffor of Law. And at the fame time, the Rev. William Nelfon, of Chrift's college, and Doctor of Divinity in the Univerfity of Cambridge, was admitted to the fame degree in this University, to which he was prefented by Doctor Collinfon, Lady Margaret's Profeffor of Divinity.

The freedom of this city was prefented in a gold box to his Lordship on the preceding day.

On the 27th ult. was inftituted to the vicarage of Chepstow, the Rev. William Morgan, on the prefentation of Edward Beavan, Efq. void by the death of the late incumbent, the Rev. W. Sayfe. Laft week were elected the Rev. Griffith Griffith, M. A. Fellow, and Mr. Thomas Davies, Scholar of Jefus college.

The Rev. H. Baffet, of Glentworth, in Lincolnshire, was on the 13th ult. inftituted, and on the 18th and 26th inducted to the livings of Glentworth and Thoresby, by the Right Rev. the Lord Bishop of Lincoln.

On Friday last John King, Bachelor in Medicine, of Chrift Church, was admitted Doctor in Medicine; J. Erskine, Eq. Master of Arts, and Student in Civil Law, of Chrift Church; and the Rev, John Dampier, Student in Civil Law, of Baliol college, were admitted Bachelors in Civil Law.-Charles Price, Mafter of Arts, and Student in Medicine, of Wadham college, was admitted Bachelor, and to practife in Medicine.-The Rev. CAMBRIDGE.

July 2.] Upon an application to the court of Chancery to fet afide the charter of Downing college, as having been unduly obtained, after a hearing of three days, on Tuesday laft the validity of that charter was established.

The Rev. Thomas Toke, M. A. of Chrift's college, is elected into a fellowfhip of that fociety, in the room of Henry Bertram Ogle, Eiq.

The Rev. Mr. Warter, Mr. Charles Grant, Mr. Robert Grant, of Magdalen, and Mr. Samuel Lowe, of Trinity college, were on Wednesday elected Fellows of Magdalen.

The four prizes of 15 guineas each, given annually by the Reprefentatives in Parliament for this Univerfity, for the beft differtations in Latin profe, are this year adjudged as follows: for the Senior Bachelors, to Mr. Henry Vincent Bayley, and Mr. Charles Le Bas of Trinity college; and for the Middle Bachelors, to Mr. Henry Martyn of St. John's, and Mr. Charles Grant, of Magdalen college.

The Rev. George Stevenfon, rector of the Union of Callan, and formerly Fellow of King's college, is prefented to the deanry of Kilfenora, in Ireland.

A difpenfation has paffed the Great Seal to enable the Rev. Henry Harrifon, A. M. of Magdalen college, Oxford, and Chaplain to the Earl of Romney, to hold the rectory of Warmington, in Warwickshire, with the rectory of Bugook, in Northamptonshire.

The fermon on Commencement Sunday, at Great St. Mary's church, was preached in the morning by the Rev. Dr. Nelfon, brother of Adin. Lord Vifc. Nelfon, Duke of Bronti, from Matthew, chap. 14. v. 18. The afternoon fermon was preached by the Rev. Dr. Strong, Archdeacon of Northampton, from Romans, chap. 1. V. 17.

Tuesday last being Commencement Day, feveral noblemen and gentlemen were admitted to their different degrees. Earl Percy, fon of his Grace the Duke of Northumberland, is admitted of St. John's college.

The Lord Bishop of London has been pleafed to prefent the Rev. Profeffor Wollafton to the place and dignity of a Prebendary, in the cathedral church of St. Paul.

The Rev. J. H. Renouard, one of the Junior Fellows of Trinity college, is elected Senior Fellow, in the room of the late Mr. Garnham.

We again entreat Communications for the Churchman's Memorial. The refident Clergy can very eafily, by fearching their respective regifters, furnish the Editors with the names of the perfons who were deprived of their preferments, in the time of the Civil War, and with the names of their fucceffors; alfo whether the former recovered their livings at the Restoration.

THIS

LIFE OF DR. ANTHONY HORNECK.

HIS excellent man was born, anno 1641, at Bacchatach, in the Lower Palatinate. His father, Recorder of that place, was a very ftrict proteftant, and a perfon of great reputation; and devoting his fon to the miniftry from the womb, gave him fuch an education as might fit him for that facred office. He was firft fent to Heidelburgh, where he applied himself, with great diligence, to the fludy of divinity, under the direction and care of the learned Dr. Spanheim, and, at 19 years of age, came over to England, and was even then very eminent, both for learning and piety.

He was entered in Queen's College in Oxford, Dec. 24, 1663, where he was in great esteem with Dr. Barlow, then Provost of that house, who valued him highly for his great learning, and more particularly for his skill in the eastern languages. By his favour, he was made Chaplain of the said college foon after his entrance, and incorporated Master of Arts from the univerfity of Wittemberg. Not long after, he was made Vicar of All Hallows in Oxford, which was in the gift of Lincoln College, where he continued a most constant and painful preacher, about two years. Thence he removed into the family of the Duke of Albemarle, and was received as tutor to his fon, Lord Torrington. The Duke bestowed upon him a living in the diocese of Exeter *, and also procured him, from Dr. Sparrow, a Prebend in that Church.

Before he married, he went over into Germany, 1669, to fee his friends, where he preached with great acceptation, and was entertained with much refpect, at the court of Charles Lodowick, Elector Palatine, who fhewed him particular kindness. After his return he was chofen Preacher at the Savoy, anno 1671, where he continued about twenty-fix years, till he died, a bleffing both to the inhabitants of that place, and, indeed, to the whole city. He was conftant in the discharge of the duties of his ftation; preached with great vehemence and ardour, and alfo with mighty force and conviction.
