It is only doing juftice to her merit to obferve that the whole tenour of her life was a continued round of kindness, good nature, and affability, and that her actions were an example which all who knew her were anxious to imitate; they were fuch as gave her parents fatisfaction and delight, and fuch indeed as muft long endear her to every feeling mind. So highly was the esteemed by her companions, that few were poffeffed of courage fufficient to attend her to the grave; but thofe few who could pay her this tribute of respect, were, from a fenfe of her genuine worth, fo bathed in tears, and fo involved in diftrefs, that nothing could footh their poignant grief but the animating reflection of her being made completely happy in the realms of blifs. CHURCHMAN'S MAGAZINE,

For NOVEMBER, 1802.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness.

ST. PAUL to TIMOTHY.

THE LIFE OF THE RIGHT REVEREND THOMAS WILSON, D. D. LORD BISHOP OF SODOR AND MAN.

THIS venerable and apoftolic Prelate was born at Burton, in the county of Chefter, December the 20th, 1663; and, as he fays himfelf in his Manufcript Diary, "of honeft parents, fearing God."

His father died in 1702; his mother, whofe maiden name was Sherlock, and nearly related to the celebrated Dean of St. Paul's, furvived her husband a few years; fo that both his parents lived to fee him a Bifhop. In his Diary he always fpeaks of his parents in the most dutiful and affectionate terms; and it appears to have been his daily practice, to offer up prayers for their temporal and eternal welfare. Great care was taken of his education; and, at a proper age, he was placed under the tuition of Mr. Harper, a very eminent schoolmafter, in the city of Chefter, with whom he continued till he was fufficiently qualified for the university. He was then removed to Trinity College, Dublin, whither moft of the young gentlemen of Lancashire and Cheshire, were, at that time fent, with an allowance of twenty pounds a year; a fum which, however small it may be thought, was in thofe days fufficient for a fober ftudent in fo cheap a country as Ireland.-Upon Mr. Wilfon's admiflion to the university, it was his intention to have ftudied phyfic; but he was perfuaded by Archdeacon Hewetfon to dedicate himfelf to the Church, for which he feemed by nature more particularly defigned. He did not, however, entirely relinquish the pursuit of medical knowledge. A circumftance that was afterwards productive of much benefit to the people of his diocefe.

During his refidence at Dublin, he conducted himself with the utmost regularity and decorum; and by his diligent application, made a great proficiency in academical learning. He continued at college till the year 1686, when, on the 29th of June, he was, at the immediate inftance Vol. III. Churchm. Mag. Nov. 1802, K k
