I have indeed, unbidden, I acknowledge, boldly, and undauntedly, volunteered hitherto in an arduous enterprize, an irkfome, hazardous, and unprofitable warfare; namely, as occafion may arise, calmly and difpaffionately to infpect the reigning publications, (efpecially the periodical) which appear to have most influence in leading and biafling THE PUBLIC MIND: And as far as "the learning and talents" which the B. TO THE EDITORS OF THE ORTHODOX CHURCHMAN'S MAGAZINE. GENTLEMEN,

WHETHER this Effay was intended for publication, cannot now be known. Mr. W. Ludlam's Theological MSS. were bequeathed by him to his brother T. Ludlam; but Mr. T. Ludlam was warned by his brother, to take a copy of this Effay in the life-time of the author, fince he would probably never fee the original after his death. Mr. T. L. availed himself of the information, and found the prophecy a true one.

WE find in the writings of certain Divines much faid to fhew that conversation ought ALWAYS to be upon religious subjects, even in public and mixed companies. Those who, upon fuch occafions, fpeak on the ufual topics-the public occurrences of the nation, or the more private ones of their own town, or their own families, matters of literature, or improvements in arts or sciences; thofe, and all who join in fuch earthly converfation, are cenfured, as having no liking to religious fubjects; are reproached with a want of power to introduce them; and we are told*, "that to talk of God upon a vifit, would turn the hearers fick or four; and that the speaker would be branded for a rude man and a methodist." Let us enquire, then, on the principles of reafon and religion, whether all talk, except upon religious fubjects, is forbidden, particularly in what are called vifiting companies; companies of eight or ten perfons, no otherwife connected, than as neighbours living in the fame town, and invited
