MADAM-I know not any one to whom I may so appo priately dedicate these volumes as to the generous lady founded “The Gamble Library” in the College over w have the honour to preside. The rare and valuable works contained in that collection have supplied no small portion of the information presented to the reader in the following pages. It is but due to you thus publicly to acknowledge that the literary toil expended on the preparation of this History has been greatly stimulated and encouraged by you munificence.
