PREFACE.

THE success of the first volume of the New England Sabbath School Question Book has encouraged us to prepare a second. The portion of Scripture with which the questions of this volume are connected, is the remaining chapters of John, and the first four of the Acts. The plan of the book is similar to that of Vol. I. Some points of difference will be observed, which may perhaps be considered improvements.

The Reviews have been prepared with more care, and introduced as a regular lesson. Whether these shall be the most profitable and interesting lessons in the book, will depend on the Teacher. There will be found at the close of every lesson a General Question. This is entirely distinct from the subject of the lesson, and sometimes has no relation to it. These questions are such as may be answered with some attention and effort, or they may occupy much time and thought. The design of the writer is, to have these questions answered on the Sabbath after the lesson with which they are connected is attended to, the Teacher giving the child assistance, according as his age and acquaintance with Scripture may demand. In this manner variety will be secured, and the more advanced scholars will be acquiring a general as well as a particular acquaintance with the Bible. As no references have been made to the portions of the Scripture containing the subjects of the General Questions, perhaps

the Teacher may find it necessary, on the previous Sabbath, to give the child some instructions in this respect.

This volume is adapted for an entire year, when the school is continued through the winter. If the Teacher finds fewer questions addressed to the personal experience of the scholar in this than in the first volume, it is only because we hope he is so fully persuaded of their importance, that they will spontaneously suggest themselves to his own mind, in connection with the various lessons, without the necessity of printed forms.

There should be much affectionate, personal appeal, accompanied with fervent prayer; and if this part of the Teacher's duty be faithfully discharged, he may toil on in the delightful work until his Master shall call him home, cheered by the hope of bringing many sheaves with him into the garner of the Lord. If this little volume shall at all aid in the good work, all the praise will be due to Him "whose we are and whom we serve."

QUESTIONS

ON THE

GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JOHN.

LESSON I.

Jesus goes to Bethany, and sups with the Sisters of

Lazarus.

CH. xii. 1-11..

1 Then Jesus, six days before the passover, came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.

2 There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.

3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair and the house was filled with the odor of the ointment.

4 Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him,

5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?

6 This he said, not that he cared for the

poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put

therein.

7 Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.

8 For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.

9 Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came, not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.

10 But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death;

II Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.

We are now approaching the last events of the life of Jesus.

What miracle is spoken of in the last chapter? What effect had this miracle produced on the people? Chap. 11:45.

1 To what place did Jesus go? How far and which way is this from Jerusalem ?

How long before the Passover was this?
Who was there?
