Review: The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer

Editorial Review - Bookreporter.com

THE EMPEROR OF ALL MALADIES is a magnificent, profoundly humane “biography” of cancer from its first documented appearances thousands of years ago through the epic battles in the twentieth century to cure, control, and conquer it to a radical new understanding of its essence. Physician, researcher, and awardwinning science writer, Siddhartha Mukherjee examines cancer with a cellular biologist's ... Read full review

An interesting read
Good for chemo days! Interesting stuff I had not known of before. A bit dry at parts, but overall fun to read.

Superb. Flatly, simply, superb. The amount of time, research and information this book covers is amazing. Mukherjee did an astonishing job delving into the history, biology, treatment and future of cancer. In addition to being clearly and simply written, the book conveys an astonishing amount of insight into the origins and lifecycle of cancer, a true biography. Any layperson will learn a tremendous amount about cancer by reading this book, and I would venture that any doctor will encounter some surprising insights about its history as well. A must-read, I wish I could give it six stars out of five.

An incredibly informative history presented in a way that makes it compelling as well. An absolute pleasure to read - I wish Mr. Mukherjee was also a cardiologist, because I'd love a sequel!

Truly awesome. A must read for anyone remotely curious about one of humanity's great fears.

While one might think that this book is "dry" and written like a textbook, this couldn't be further from the truth. The author captures you from the first pages as he describes his experience with patients as an oncology fellow. He masterfully incorporates historical concepts of cancer research and drug development with contemporary patient stories. This is one of the most fascinating books I have read in a long time. Highly recommended to anyone that has an interest in oncology!

A "Biography" of cancer itself. Very dense and detailed, well-researched. It is grueling to read of the history of treatment - you can imagine how people used to be chopped up. The history of breast ... Read full review

I know I started this book many times and took breaks from it even more, but it is a work of beauty. Part of what took me so long to complete this book was going off on tangents that were directly ... Read full review

The biography of cancer. An epic accomplishment. There are many types of science writers: propeller heads who can't communicate to the plebe readers like me, journalists who write as outsiders looking ... Read full review
